THROW PIES AT DAWN! BOO, DAWN!

I don't like Dawn. It is as simple as that. She is a California cliche -- blond, surfer, health food hound. That is all just a stereotype.
In this book, she rams her environmental interest (obsession, really)down everybody's throat. It was good that she was able to organize a recycle team at her middle school. It was good that she encouraged others to get involved. What was NOT good was the way she wanted credit for the whole shebang. That pitiful girl was so greedy for credit it was sad. I liked it when Stacey, a fellow sitter complained that Dawn was driving everybody bananas by taking her environmental issues to an extreme. She all but put out a citizen's arrest on folks who weren't vegetarians or who threw away paper, glass, plastic and metal products. I think this girl needs to be recycled. I was glad when she moved back to the West Coast.

I rated "Dawn Saves the Planet" 5 stars because it was one of Ann M. Martin's best BSC books ever! This one was about how Dawn started an ecology class for her science project at school, with Stacey helping her. Then Dawn starts bossing everyone around and starts acting obnoxious to everybody, even her friends in the club. Will Jessi, Kristy, and the other BSC members tell Dawn how she's been acting so she'll stop it? If you want to find out, read "Dawn Saves the Planet!"

Dawns trying to do a good thing, but she's driving every-one crazy! Dawn decides to do a progect about the enviorment.With Stacey helping her, she's sure that every-thing will work out. But then Dawn turns bossy, and Stacey is'nt sure she want's to work with her. Dawn and Stacey's friendship is threatend until the other B.S.C. members tell dawn how bossy she is being. Will dawn and stacey frogive eachother? Read this book to find out.

Each chapter can be thought of one of a series of lectures in APEX with loads of useful information all aimed at not just building an application, but at giving you the understanding of the many configuration options within the development environment. It must not be thought of as a simple tutorial containing a set of steps for building an application. While there are some excellent books that use this style, this book encourages deeper understanding & can be used prior to moving on to a more complex tutorial style book. The book is a superb foundation for studying & learning APEX application development.

The backbone of the book is an application called The Employee Database which holds HR – type records & provides the reader with a focus for their study & experimentation. Starting off with instruction on how to obtain a free APEX account, the book then discusses & encourages the reader to learn how to create a range of different database front-end features such as input forms, reports & graphs, as well as how to configure them to maximum effect. The coding ability within APEX is exploited to provide real power & all code needed is provided & explained within the book’s covers. To round off, the reader will learn how to implement a security scheme as well as how to avoid some common weaknesses such as cross-code scripting & SQL injection. Not something many other titles cover.

In conclusion if you would like a thorough book that forces you to think as you learn rather than just instructs, this is most certainly the book for you.

Really effective way to master APEX

The previous version of this book was the key ingredient in my APEX learning strategy and I am currently reading this new version to gain more insight and get up to speed on APEX 5.

The biggest challenge I find with APEX is understanding how the various pieces fit together so you can figure out where to look for a particular setting or where to look to track down a bug in your app. This book has what I think is the ideal strategy for helping you up this learning curve:

The book starts by helping you wrap your mind around the major elements of an APEX application: pages, regions, and items. The focus of the book is on understanding how these pieces fit together into a logical framework. Which means that as I went through the book I began to build my own mental model of how APEX works. I cannot stress enough how important this is: your SQL code is just a small piece of your application's design and you need to a clear mental model to understand where your code lives, when it runs, and how it interacts with all the other parts of APEX that are defined using its GUI.

Another thing I like about the book is the approach to examples. Yes, it is cool to have a book build some really impressive application as you walk through but then it becomes harder to dip into the book at random points to learn specific skills and have the example make as much sense. By using a series of small, ad hoc examples, each section of the book stands alone and you can read through the example to understand the specific thing being explained. The fact that the examples make use of the sample tables that ship with APEX makes it easy to quickly try something out without needing to have followed along an entire process of building an example. (Note: there is one change you need to make in the example, which the author describes in Chapter 1: adding an additional column to the EMP table, and this would be worth doing at the outset.)

One other aspect of the book I would like to highlight: while this book assumes no prior knowledge of APEX it does assume you are interested in pushing this tool as far as you can. The book includes some examples of more advanced techniques like the use of dynamic SQL to increase the interactivity of reports. You can easily skip over this stuff to focus on learning the basics, which are presented really clearly, but when you are ready to explore where you can go with APEX this more advanced stuff points the way. I find it quite unusual and welcome to have both these levels available in a book that is just over 300 pages.

The result is a very accessible, very readable, and very practical guide to APEX. Highly recommended!

Quick aside: as the book itself makes clear, the book is not intended as an introduction to SQL or databases. You should go elsewhere for that. But once you have a basic grasp of SQL and know just a bit of HTML (the very basics) then this is *the* first place I would go to start learning APEX.

Great fun for all ages!!!

This is a great curriculum for the summer! We are using it for ages 4 through 5th grade and it's great and fun, even with the large age gap. We had been using Bible Drills during the school year but wanted to give the kids a change during the summer and this is perfect. Great ideas, easy to follow, and everyone looks forward to what's coming next!

Written by William Mastrosimone and opening in New York in 1982, EXTREMITIES ran for less than a year--but its fame became such that it was soon widely around the country and it continues to be well regarded today.

The story, which plays out in two acts, is surprisingly simple. Marjorie shares a house with two room mates, Terry and Patricia. One morning when her roommates are out, a strange man barges into the house. He claims to be looking for a friend named Joe--but it is soon clear he has come to rape Marjorie, who he seems to have been stalking for quite some time. But Marjorie is lucky: when the attack begins she is able to grab a can of wasp-killer and sprays her attacker in the face. He is blinded and in pain, and she uses the opportunity to trap him in the fireplace, where she tortures him with threats to bury him alive in the garden.

The second act finds the two roommates returned to the house. Both are shocked and horrified, but both have very different attitudes about the event. Terry confesses that she herself was raped--and said nothing about it because she felt she couldn't prove it. She holds out no hope that Majorie will be believed, and she urges Marjorie to simply let the rapist go. Patricia puts her own faith in the law, and urges Marjorie to summon the authorities. As the wrangle progresses, the rapist cleverly interjects comments that further divide the women against each other--until Marjorie discovers that he is carrying a hunting knife, a fact that indicates he not only intended to rape Marjorie, but kill her, and possibly her roommates as well. The play concludes with the rapist confessing to other rapes, and with this information available to support her own story, Marjorie at last allows her roommates to summon the authorities.

The play is brutal, with a tremendous amount of stage violence. Both Susan Saranda and Farrah Fawcett played the role of Majorie in the New York run, and both repeatedly suffered a number of accidental injuries during the production due to the extreme degree of stage violence involved. It is partly because of the play's physical demands that it is rarely performed these days, but it is probably also equally due to the uncomfortable truths the play raises. How would you strike back? Fast paced, violent and cruel play about a lowlife, Raul, who intrudes upon Marjorie, an unemployed young woman. He attempts to rape her, but she swiftly turns the tables, caging him in a fireplace and torturing him.

This isn't giving away the story, because the significance of Extremities is in the behavior, especially of Marjorie, toward Raul, and her roommates, Patricia and Terry, who both come home and must deal with the situation.

What makes Extremities interesting is the sort of fatal hand of timing, in that Marjorie seems to be at her wits end, and Raul's presence precipitates an unraveling that exposes the animal and the pain and anger in a young woman.

The writing is fast paced, full of colloqueal slang, raw and brazen in it's frayed nerves.

This is a quick read, and would be interesting and intense to see on stage.
