The other great Santideva work.

Superior to the old translation by Bendall, Goodman's version is readable, clear and heartening! Not all readers (like me), may like some of his unique translation choices. It is a compilation from the sutras, with comments by Santideva, focused on the altruistic path of the Bodhisattva. Extensive Introduction, endnotes, yet poor index.

An essential text for Mahayana followers.

Fills in the gaps!

Think of this as a textbook clarifying all those names and techniques that dance teachers may have referenced while you were trying to concentrate on alignment or form (or just not falling over) during dance class through the years.

I minored in dance in college but focused mainly on ballet. This book has helped to round out my modern education.

If you're looking for a broad overview of the last century in concert dance, this may be a great resource for you as well. Legg covers the evolution of modern dance from Denishawn and Isadora Duncan to Paul Taylor and "Postmodernism." Familiarity of dance in general will probably be a big help!

Small businesses take note: Corporate personhood hurts you as well

Thom Hartmann has, once again, provided an informative, rational and readable view of our world, its problems and what to do about them. This time its an update of his previous work on the domination of large corporations by virtue of "corporate personhood." He steps through the principles of the founders of our nation and then through Supreme Court decisions, or lack thereof, bringing history alive by quotes, photos and anecdotes about the people involved and why they acted as they did. He factually documents the negative impact corporate personhood has had on real persons and the society in which we live. Readers should sit up and take notice, however, that Hartmann reveals herein that it is not just ordinary humans who now have unequal protection under the law. Small and local businesses too have been trampled under the feet of the "big boys" of the economy. Those who advocate free market capitalism and who endorse corporate personhood often claim the purpose of helping small businesses or strengthening local economies. Just the opposite is the actual impact of these economic policies, as he clearly and amply demonstrates. Finally, he pulls in the comments of modern-day capitalists who have learned that removing the standing of corporations as persons under the law will not destroy big business either. In fact, in the long-run, it will ensure broad-based growth of the economy, as the capitalism without regulation that results from corporate personhood is not sustainable.

Readable, entertaining and definitely eye-opening

In 2009, "the transnational pharmaceutical giant Pfizer pled guilty to multiple criminal felonies. It had been marketing drugs in a way that may well have led to the deaths of people ... [Pfizer] paid a $1.2 billion 'criminal' fine to the U.S. government ... as well as an additional $1 billion in civil penalties... None of its executives... saw even five minutes of the inside of a police station or jail cell ... in the autumn of 2004, Martha Stewart was convicted of lying to investigators about her sale of stock in another pharmaceutical company. Her crime cost nobody their life, but she famously was escorted off to a women's prison. Had she been a corporation instead of a human being, odds are there never would have been an investigation."

This punchy opening of this surreal book by Thom Hartmann gets you hooked from the very first line. It's true. What are corporations if not the actions of the people who work in and for them? If a corporation does wrong, simply writing a check to the government doesn't seem to cut it when the people responsible for the wrong-doing retain their jobs, pay-checks, privileges, and avoid punishment under the law. Hartmann explains, in great historical detail, how corporations became "persons" under US national law with rights equivalent to those of "natural persons" (you and me, flesh and blood, individuals); including the First Amendment right of all persons to free speech, the Fourth Amendment right to privacy, the Fifth Amendment protection against double jeopardy and self-incrimination and the Fourteenth Amendment right to non-discrimination. Moreover, Thom Hartmann, blow by blow, explains how corporations have exploited these rights to advance their own interests, or at least, those of the "persons" who stood to benefit, at the expense of the common good and the people of the United States.

It all began, apparently, in 1886 when the Supreme Court Justice Morrison Waite pronounced judgment in a case of the Southern Pacific Railroad versus Santa Clara country, about the taxation levied on this corporation by the County. The lawyers claimed that the railroad corporation was entitled to the same rights as a "person". The court reporter noted in the written record of the case that, "The defendant corporations are persons within the intent of the clause in section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which forbids a State to deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." This written record, Thom Hartmann goes on to show, was actually an error and not the explicit intention of Justice Waite. Nonetheless, this record set the tone and served to legitimize all subsequent claims to corporate personhood for the rest of history until the present day. Further, Hartman postulates that this was all a big conspiracy engineered by the railroad lawyers who stood to make significant financial gain through defending more corporations in this way. The story is as incredible as it is outrageous and has the reader in a state of both disbelief and indignation. Surely the whole basis of corporate law in the US couldn't have been derived from little more than a mistake? This is quite fascinating and the arguments are succinctly articulated with references to original documents and records of the time. If we are to believe this author, the entire legal infrastructure governing corporations may well have been a complete farce, opening the floodgates for unchecked corporate abuse of the law as it was originally intended.

Hartmann deals with many controversial and poorly understood issues relating to the power of corporations over the human rights of individuals, providing detailed case studies of an array of events and actions in relation to corporations. The reading is riveting, and even though we have heard many of these stories before, the "get to the real truth" approach of the author makes this compelling reading. We read about the events leading to the Boston Tea Party, which was a protest against the power of the East India Company, who had successfully lobbied to support the Tea Act which gave the East India Company full and unlimited access to the American tea trade as well as tax exemptions, thus helping to drive other tea-traders out of business. Hartmann recounts the astounding story of why the Marc Kasky case against Nike's "right to lie" in their marketing materials in the name of freedom of speech was never tried in court. Other chapters include the exposure of issues such as the lawsuit by the Texas beef barons against Oprah Winfrey for commenting that she would avoid eating hamburgers after an outbreak of mad-cow disease, the concentrated corporate ownership of the not-so-free press, corporate support for political campaigns, the limitations of federal authorities to carry out spot checks on businesses to assess health and safety compliance, comparisons of US versus European law and the application of the precautionary principle which is not law in the USA, the use by politicians and companies of Professional Blog Warriors who blast the Internet from all corners to make campaigns more effective, the complication of global corporations doing business across borders, military spending and corporate interests and more. All these stories show how the power of corporations threatens the basis of democracy and the protection of the human rights of "natural" persons. John Ruggie would feel extremely validated, reading this book.

As a non-lawyer, I found this book immensely readable, despite several long legal texts used to provide substance to the author's presentation of the issues. These cases are sometimes so incredible that they defy belief. Thom Hartman is "the (US) nation's #1 progressive radio talk show host" as well as being an award-winning well-respected author of over 21 books (he also works for humanitarian causes). He appears in this book to have conducted thorough research, though make no mistake about his intention: to convince us that we must get our rights back from corporate predators who not only do not deserve them but also abuse them. His concluding chapter offers suggestions as to how we might go about doing this, including references to democracy campaigners and organizations, such as the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund or ReclaimDemocracy.org. Whether you believe in the conspiracy theories or the "hegemony of corporate personhood", or whether you do not, this book is certainly a recommended read. It is entertaining, using a dramatic story-telling pace to recount history, and very thought-provoking indeed.

I have a few critiques but overall shows what I like about the left

The purpose of this book is to show how Corporations sneakily got themselves the same legal rights as human beings, how they use and abuse this to their advantage and the biggest "first step" to straighten this out is to deny the Corporats their right to personhood.

Most people do not know that Corporations have the right to lie and make false claims and are not criminally liable because since Corporations have legal personhood it is protected by their first amendment right to free speech. They also used fourth amendment rights to privacy to block health and safety inspections at their plants. These are just a few examples of how they have used the Bill of Rights in a very wormy treacherous way.

Overall Unequal Protection is very good left wing stuff but I have criticisms. For one he buys into a lot of the false mythology of the so called founding Fathers, the American revolution and the Boston tea party. He tries to frame the American revolution in a way that portrays it as the founding Fathers were anti-Capitalists battling the evil wicked East India Company. This is utterly laughable. While they may have had some admirable qualities overall the founding Fathers were rich Capitalist pig slave owning freemason scumbags whose main concern was money grubbing and stealing Indian land so they could turn it over and sell it to the white settlers. And lest I remind you of what they did once they got in power. Ever heard of the Whiskey Rebellion or Shays Rebellion? These are good examples of what happened to anybody outside the small circle of rich elites that tried to exercise any of that so called new found freedom that the founding fathers talked about.

Also Hartmann goes on about and praises Democracy a bit much for my taste. For one America was supposed to be a Republic not a Democracy. But instead of looking at it like Plato did and acknowledging that Democracy always erodes, gets twisted and perverted into the monstrosity that it is now Hartmann still worships Democracy like its some sort of holy unquestionable system. I mean seriously at this point Democracy is nothing but a code word for exploitive Capitalism and Globalist monoculture.

Criticisms aside, like I said this very good left wing stuff that I agree with most of his observations and many of his solutions.

About the Author

Loved the Light

I love a book like this that I can jump around to different chapters. No need to "begin at the beginning." I have to say that I enjoyed Keidi's own story of her Light experience more than any of the others. Entering different dimensions and meeting higher beings there is so cool. I was drawn to "Healing the Past" because I teach a form of that in my own work. The uncorrected past blocks us until we drop it, and this was also the opinion of the author, Mr. Waterborn. My next favorite part was "Manifesting Miracles." Dr. Morter gives us lessons in Miracle Making 101. I have always felt like Dr. Morter that miracles are natural events that we miss because our sight is not finely tuned enough. This whole book is one big miracle, and I love the way it made its way to the world. Magical path, indeed.

Do yourself a favor, and experience (not read) this book. Whenever you are down, pick it up and start reading anywhere in it. The Light will guide you to what you need in that moment. Try it and see. you will be as amazed as I was. Enjoy!

New Inspiration for 2013!

Keidi has done an amazing job. Her work with so many fantastic luminaries is awe inspiring. It's nice to find more authors writing positive and encouraging works today. I'm excited and pleased to have this book in my collection, and happily recommend it to anyone who wishes to find positive literary works of art.

A Compendium of Wisdom and Inspiration

Before the publication of this highly enjoyable and wonderful book, I interviewed Keidi Keating for "Sharing Your Passion", my interview film series.
What struck me then and remains so now is the uniqueness of Keidi's project. Here was a young lady assembling a cast of twenty-two highly evolved souls to produce a book, not only on how they each came to find the light within themselves, but also on how "we" - the readers - might also do so.
This compendium of souls had, Keidi explained, mentored or helped her in some way.
"The book is my way of giving back," she said. "I want to share the wisdom. It's not "my" book; I see it as selfless service..."
Keidi's selflessness is epitomised by the book's non-commercial status. All of the net profits go to charity. Keidi has thus created something which entirely benefits others - well, almost! I say "almost" only because I foresee Keidi getting a lot of kudos and praise for what she has manifested here, and deservedly so.

The book is non-fiction - just to be clear. Still it contains many wonderful stories. It is of course about light, but in the spiritual sense, and in the metaphoric sense and in the individual awakening sense. It looks at light from the sensory and non-sensory perspectives. And it is about seeing the world in a different, positive and uplifting light
For example, I am not a Quantum Physicist but, if I were, I would probably tell you that everything is energy. Since everything means everything, light is also energy. And so everything is also light. We humans are light, even though it appears to our five senses that we are physical bodies. And so we are capable of so much more than what we believe we can do with and in our physical bodies.
Light is used as a metaphor throughout the book. This is light as awareness, as in the phrase "seeing the light."
Investigating the so-called "Inner Light", also known as "the True Self", "the Soul" or "the Heart," the book illustrates the importance of acknowledging this light as part of the Oneness of who we are, so that we may, for example, allow the light to flow and so allow life itself to create through us.

The book is a rich source of wisdom and inspiration. I particularly liked the following:

"Once the need to survive is removed from the Mind's experience, the Soul has the space and freedom to express it's true nature. We then start walking through the world in an entirely different way; no longer stressing and straining, no longer competing, no longer looking for the advantage, no longer needing, wanting or asking for anything. We simply stand in the space of life with a single and simple question: "How may I serve you, how may I love you, how may I be here with you in such a way that you know exactly who you really are?" - Neale Donald Walsh

"Only through more loving can more things be healed" - John Roger

"Today corporations, not governments control global economics. We are those corporations. Many of us work for them and almost all of us buy from them. Up until now, we have sent a strong message that we want high quality but inexpensive shirts and jeans and that if they are made in sweat shops in Asia or Latin America, we will turn a blind eye and look the other way. We send the message that we want cheaper petrol for our cars and if that means destroying the Amazon rainforest, then we will turn a blind eye and look the other way. This has to change. The book covers considerable ground. There is so much you can find here - from the power of feng shui to the power of forgiveness; from reversing the ageing process to working with angels; from releasing blockages to living as unconditional love. And I am just touching the surface!

Without naming the writers concerned - buy the book and see for yourself - I loved the chapters on flowing with the river of light, the divine artist, the colours of love and understanding the light, respectively. And when I read the book again, I may give you a different selection!
This is a book to refer back to, one that I will certainly re-read, and maybe more than once. And, as with many of the best spiritual books, I sense I will find something new every time I dip in.

To read The Light is to be reminded of who we really are or, if you prefer, who we really can be. The reader is given many paths and opportunities and ample encouragement, not only to see life in a much bigger light but to fully embrace it. And there are practical exercises to help!

The book is not for everyone. And I do not say that lightly! In Keidi's own words, "anybody who is meant to find the book, will find it..."

Well, you have found the book. Ergo, you are meant to read it. And I predict that you will be delighted!

The construction of tunnels involves the resolution of various complex technical problems depending on the geological and geological-environmental context in which the work fits.

It was therefore felt that there was a need to collect in one volume the state of current knowledge about:

all the geological and environmental issues related to the construction of underground works
the different methodologies used for the reconstruction of the conceptual model
the different risk typologies that it is possible to encounter or that can arise from tunnel construction, and
the most important risk assessment, management and mitigation methodologies that are used in tunneling studies.

About the Author

Paola Gattinoni is Assistant Professor of Applied Geology for the Politecnico di Milano. She teaches geologic-technical survey and hydrogeology and she is the author of more than 60 papers concerning water flow in fractured rocks; interactions between fluvial dynamics and slope stability, landslides and groundwater modelling; statistical analysis application in geological and hydrogeological fields, and geological and hydrogeological risk assessment.

Enrico Maria Pizzarotti is a civil engineer who graduated from Politecnico di Milano. He has been working as a designer and consultant in tunneling, underground and geotechnical works, and hydroelectric power plants for more than 25 years. He is now Senior Partner and Technical Director of Pro Iter S.r.l. (an engineering company in Milan). He is the author of more than 30 technical papers concerning underground excavation, deep foundations, slope stabilization, ground improvement technologies and rock mechanics.

Laura Scesi is Professor of Applied Geology at the Politecnico di Milano (School of Civil and Environmental Engineering). She teaches engineering geology and geological-technical survey. Over the years she has conducted extensive research especially on underground excavations connected with geological and hydrogeological problems; landslides and risk analysis; and hydraulic circulation in rocks for the prediction of water inflows in tunnels. She has published more than 80 scientific works and books.

About the Author
Joe Cermele started his career in outdoor journalism in 2004, covering fishing tournaments for a local magazine in his home state of New Jersey. In 2005, while attending Rider University, he became an intern at Salt Water Sportsman magazine, joining the editorial staff full time that same year after graduation. In 2008, he moved to sister publication Field & Stream, where he was named Fishing Editor in 2011. His writing appears monthly in the magazine, he blogs weekly on the magazine’s website, and also hosts and produces Field & Stream’s Hook Shots, an award-winning web-based fishing show with a punk-rock edge. Cermele has fished all over the country and abroad, but when he’s not traveling on assignment, you can find him on his boat chasing tuna and striped bass off the Jersey coast, pitching tubes to smallmouth bass on the Delaware River, or flyfishing for trout in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

TIP 144- FLOAT-RIG FROM SHORE

Here’s a basic technique for tying a rig that is a standard for fishing from shore.

STEP 1 Tie a # 8 bait hook on the end of your line.

STEP 2 Slip a bell sinker onto the line and run it up 12 to 20 inches from the hook.

STEP 3 Using a split-shot weight on the line, lock the bell sinker in place from sliding any closer to your hook.

When you cast the rig, the bell sinker goes to the bottom and your hook can float up the length of line between your hook and the split shot.

This technique uses the hook to present your bait up and off of the bottom. This presentation is important because a trout’s eyes are positioned pointing upwards, making it easy for them to target a meal floating in the water column above them or sitting on the surface. Feeding mainly on invertebrates, trout cruise close to the bottom and keep a careful eye out above them for an easy meal.

In order to get your bait off the bottom you can use floating bait or incorporate a hook to lift your bait off the bottom.
Try fishing dew worms, and inflate them with a syringe. The air pumped into the worms make them look like a big meal and provide just enough buoyancy to lift them the length of line between your hook and sinker off the bottom.

Since worms are not always available or can be difficult to keep over several days in the field, you should experiment with the floating varieties of Berkley PowerBait and Gulp. They have several trout formulas available in a floating paste that are deadly. Knowing trout are visual feeders, actively looking for a meal, I like to use bright colours to draw their attention. The Berkley baits are ideal, as they come in chartreuse, orange, pink, yellow and combinations that are highly visible. Putting a small ball of the paste on a bait hook is just enough to float it cleanly off the bottom, providing the perfect presentation with colour, smell, and placement in the water column.

Best for younger anglers

If you have been fishing a lifetime, this book probably won't offer much to learn. That being said, for the young adult or child, this makes a great read. One of the biggest deterrents to involving young people in fishing is having a skunk day where you catch nothing and miss out on one of the greatest experiences in life, landing a fish for the first time. With the tips and lessons in this book, you can make your way to the water with a little more confidence than before and you will catch more fish, which is the key to a lifetime of enjoyment of fishing. The broad spectrum of topics makes this a great introduction book, but there is so much more to cover than one book could provide. This is the starter for a lifetime of weekends in a kayak on a creek battling smallmouth and rock bass, or just a bucket of worms and bobbers for some farm pond bluegill. Start here and never stop fishing.

Looked at a lot of different books before deciding on this one. This has great information for the basic get started fisherman. Not too advanced at all. The design is really durable with reinforced corners and cover so you can actually take this with you to fish. I mean it's not water proof but it is crafted with the intention of use. Great information and photos. We looked at 2 bookstores and decided on this but purchased with Amazon for half the price. Really happy with the purchase as it was a gift.

This book is just beautiful. I've purchased many books and most aren't in color and don't have nice thick pages or have illistrations on every page that keeps you entertained while reading like this book does. The book itself in terms of material just screams quality I would have loved to see a review specifying that fact I am quite surprised they did not charge more for this book but then again I might not have purchased it if they had. It has all the information I have always wondered about. If your like me and have ever been walking in a store in the sporting goods section and were thinking wow tons of lures I wonder how you would even use them or when to use them or how they would be effective or what works best trust me this book explains it all from building your own lures to store bought lures to various techniques. I have only glanced it over not read it through yet but I do believe they are missing a section for net fishing. Over all excellent because it teaches the novice alot.
