Accessing and Following the Small, Still Voice Within While Staying Rational

If you would seriously like to learn how to make better decisions, this book can be a breakthrough for you even if you've read many books about decision-making methods.

Whenever I meet people who have heavy responsibilities, I find that they have differing opinions about how to make decisions. Some favor a super rational approach: Get lots of facts, consider them from all angles, check out the logic using several methods, and proceed forward with confidence. Others wait until the super rational people are done sounding off and quietly point out that they get a gut feeling that tells them what to do. The two groups don't seem to have any basis for forming an agreement and eye each other uncomfortably.

It's easy to see that there might be advantages to both approaches. How might they be combined? Dr. Pam Garcy gives us a helpful method for doing so.

Much of the method helps those who don't hear the small, still voice within to access that voice. In the process, you'll find much more comfort and joy in your life.

Dr. Garcy chooses not to name the still, small voice in a definitive way: I believe this voice is the Holy Spirit of God. Others feel that this voice is intuition. There are other names. This is a secular book so it won't give you a religious approach to accessing the Holy Spirit. But if you are not a believer, this book can be a great help in accessing God's wisdom. With that Godly wisdom, you've probably come closer to God . . . which is good.

One of the great strengths of this book is to combine the wisdom of many other sources. Most people don't want to read 25 books to gain wisdom. It that's you, this book is a great resource because Dr. Garcy draws lots of knowledge together in very brief ways that you can read quite quickly and easily.

I've been down both the inner voice and the logical paths. From that experience, I suggest that some may benefit by changing the order of the recommended seven steps a bit by beginning with relaxation rather than accepting things as they are. It's hard to focus helpfully on anything important without a sense of ease. I found that meditation was very useful for this purpose, and not much else.

It's rare that I recommend that a brief book be read in even more abbreviated fashion, but I think some will enjoy this book more if they do. For the fastest read, read the disclaimer, go on to Chapter One and then skip chapters two and three, and finish by reading Chapter Four to the end. If you then want to know more about the background of the recommended process, go back and read chapters two and three.

Dr. Pam Garcy honored me with a preview copy of her book, The Power of Inner Guidance, and I followed her seven steps to the letter. The results are that it's so very easy now to make decisions which come from a place of centeredness and peace, and trust myself and choices in a whole new way. Her guide allowed me to be a better person in every way.

Pam has a remarkable understanding of what we all go through in our daily lives - we "should" ourselves to the point that it's easy to lose our true natures and question who we are. I found this book to be a simple, albeit a great read. Dr. Garcy did a phenomenal job of showing the reader how to implement the fundamental strategies of creating healthy changes in the lives of those that are searching for satisfaction of self and peace of mind. Moreover, these skills are basic! They are ones that nearly everyone has, yet do not necessarily utilize - - as she states early on in her book, "it is a true self-help book, because it will give you the skills you need to access that which you already possess" (Garcy, p. 21). This is a book anyone and everyone could use to gain (or maintain) self-awareness and a purposeful focus!

Zarking good time.

The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is one of the most famous pieces of science fiction in the English language. The story has been adapted into almost every medium, from radio to novels to tv to movies. And it's easy to see why it's so popular. This was one of the funniest books I've ever read.

Guide is primarily about the adventures of Arthur, an ordinary average guy forced to leave earth and go on a journey through the cosmos. He is joined by Ford Prefect, a writer for the Guide, Trillian, an astrophycist from Earth, Zaphod Beeblebrox, the President of the Galaxy, and Marvin, an extremely depressed robot. Over the course of five books, they encounter a wide array of aliens, planets, and towels.

The best element of these books is the humor. Adams is a master of satire, regularing stopping the plot to give a humorous take on everything he can think of. This book is almost impossible to put down it's so funny. The only downside is that he clearly had no idea where to go with the overall plot. After the second book, plots and characters would appear and disappear out of nowhere, and the ending fizzled out. That is the only reason I couldn't give this 5 stars.

This is one of the best pieces of YA literature out there. Have fun.

Beautiful book and a great story

Beautiful book and a great story. I recommend this to anyone. I originally read these books on my Kindle and enjoyed them so much I had to look for something worth displaying on my bookshelf. This is perfect. The design is great, it is sturdy, and the print is a nice size.

Funny SciFi is Perfect

I love the books so much that I bought the audio version. (It's hard to knit and read simultaneously.) The first book is read by Stephen Fry, the other four are read by Martin Freeman. If you are familiar with the story, you'll love this. If you like comedic sci-fi, you'll love this. If you liked the books, radio plays, TV movie or movie adaptation, you'll love this.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED that the books are largely unabridged. Three books in and I have found only one alteration. In "Life, the Universe, and Everything", the conversation about the award for "The Most Gratuitous Use of the Word 'Belgium' in a Serious Screenplay" has been altered and shortened. The scene is, therefore, less humorous. I miss it.

The volume on "Fractional Distillation" was written in the hope that it would be of assistance to chemists in overcoming the difficulties so frequently met with in the laboratory, not only in the actual carrying out of the fractional distillation of a complex mixture but also in the interpretation of the results obtained.

The last copy was sold shortly after the declaration of war, and the question then arose whether a revised second edition of the book in its original form should be published. It was thought, however, by the Publishers that it would be wiser to extend the scope of the work so as to include distillation on the large scale as carried out in the manufacture of important products.

That this change in the character of the book was really advisable became more and more evident as the war increased in intensity and magnitude, because of the immense importance of such materials as acetone, toluene, petrol, glycerine, and so on, the production of which involved processes of distillation on an enormous scale, and for some of which new sources or methods of formation had to be sought and investigated.

It was obvious that the larger book could only be of real value if the sections on manufacturing processes were written by chemists thoroughly conversant with the various subjects dealt with, and it was eventually decided that I should edit the book if I could secure the co-operation of experts in the different branches of manufacture.

In these preliminary negotiations I received most valuable assistance from my friends, Professor F. E. Francis, D.Sc, Ph.D., and Professor W. E. Adeney, D.Sc, and my sincere thanks are especially due to Professor Francis for the great interest he has taken in the production of the book.

Unfortunately the heavy pressure of work entailed on all chemists by the war caused serious delay in commencing the book, and progress has necessarily been slow.

William Hasker (Ph.D., University of Edinburgh) is professor emeritus of philosophy at Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana. This book really accomplishes what is quite a difficult task: to find a way to connect the inherently nebulous intellectual concept of big data and connect it to real stories and real examples of how it is impacting our lives.

After reading this, there is no doubt in my mind that Big Data is the defining movement of this generation. It's not just the individual stories, but the collection that brings about this realization. It really makes you see the data angle in so many things around us.

If you are a data scientist, you should feel pretty good about your employability over the next 50 years. And if you're not, it certainly won't hurt to understand this numeric underbelly that exists all around us.

The perfect gift for the geek in your life

I was dubious when I heard about this project. As a geek, I knew what "big data" was all about, and have found myself bemused by all of the attention it's been getting lately. I couldn't see how the idea could be translated into a big coffee table book.

Then I got the book, and spent 2 days reading through it. Wow! The pictures were great -- each one seemed to have been hand-crafted to support the story next to it. Those stories were also good: concise, crisp, with just enough detail to let me know whether I wanted to learn more. In several cases I did, using the book as a starting off point to some online surfing and follow up on my own.

As one of the other reviewers pointed out, the book does have a few pages of ads from the main sponsor EMC. So what? I've followed EMC for years, and I still learned a lot about their business from these ads. It's increasingly expensive to do these kinds of books, so I'm happy to put up for with "ad-infographics" if it means the book can be a bit cheaper. Plus, now I have an easier time convincing my wife why I'm so bullish about EMC's stock. :)

Best of all, I now have the PERFECT gift for the other geeks I know. We sit in front of our computer screens all day, and often tend to bore our non-geek friends with stories about what we do. What I like best about this book is that now I have a bunch of really cool stories to pass along to my non-geek friends -- as a geek, I appreciate and "get" the very real computer science underneath; as a cocktail party attendee, I can re-tell very cool stories about why "Big Data" is so important.

Bottom line: Perfect Valentine's gift for the geeks you love.

This book explores the concept of Big Data from so many interesting perspectives. "Big Data" is a broad term, but Rick Smolan makes it accessible by bringing it down to a personal level.
