It is a good book. Many of the information in this book can be found on his other book "All the places to go...". A central theme in this book is: "God’s primary will for your life is not the circumstances you inhabit; it’s the person you become". I would definitely recommend this book.

Too Much Guesswork Instead Of God's Personal Guidance.

Too many Old Testament references about the way that non Spirit Filled people were led by God. We are under a New Covenant where we have the promise of hearing our Shepherd and knowing His voice, not guesswork.

This book relies heavily on the, "Try it and see if it works" method of discerning God's will. The Bible calls Christians "soldiers," but I don't know of any army that doesn't issue clear directives to the troops. Yes, a soldier is expected to use his training to think on his feet, but the commanding officer doesn't just say, "Go somewhere and see if you can find the enemy." A soldier is sent to a specific location with his specific orders.

I believe that God has an exact plan for each of our lives, and He wants to tell us what it is, not just have us spending our lives guessing.

I came across this when at a crossroads and found the advice helpful - making decisions builds character. Like with our kids, we learn from the choices we make - and God allows us to do that too. It's more about who we are than what we do that's important. We can use His word for guidance; and we are meant to take action and not be paralyzed in any situation.

What a carefully written exploration!

I think this book is a masterpiece in mathematical exposition. All you need to know is how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide and maybe a vague memory of algebra. Mr. Friedberg will walk you through a lot of number theory after which (or maybe even during which) you may find a number theory textbook more approachable. If you read carefully you will really internalize what a proof by contradiction is and what an infinite descent is. You'll get a real appreciation for the logic of a proof and you'll see some ingenius tricks used by some great mathematicians ... and you'll understand them!
This book is approachable and doable by anyone with a motivation for what can be understood about numbers. And I can't stress how carefully, thoughtfully, and articulately it is written.

An impishly, well-written introduction to number theory.

The author's enthusiasm shines through as he explains primes, perfect numbers, quadratic forms, and more. The explanations are clear: not too easy, but not too hard; Mr. Friedberg does a remarkable job of gauging the reader's level (at least MY level!).
I didn't realize number theory was so much fun until I started reading this book.
Note: I noticed a small typo on p.95: the equation to generate Pythagorean triplets is missing a 'square' on the left hand side.

An informal introduction to number theory with a historical perspective.

Friedberg's text, which is written in an inviting conversational tone, is an idiosyncratic introduction to number theory which stresses the subject's historical development. The material is introduced through problems that motivate the results that Friedberg discusses. These results include Euclid's theorem that there are infinitely many prime numbers, the use of the sieve of Eratosthenes to find prime numbers less than the square root of a positive integer n, Gauss' Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic, perfect and amicable numbers, Pythagorean triples, modular arithmetic, factoring numbers of the form x^2 + ny^2, and the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity. Friedberg ably links these topics together and places them in historical perspective. However, there are better introductions to number theory. This text has no formal exercises, so you do not have an opportunity to reinforce what you are learning. It is also a poor reference because definitions, theorems, and proofs are stated within paragraphs, the whimsical chapter titles do not convey what topics are covered, and there is no subject index to help you find the definitions and theorems that are buried within the paragraphs. Also, the scope of coverage is less than that of other introductions to number theory.

In his introduction, Friedberg, a physicist, distinguishes between the common and scientific meanings of the word theory. He also discusses the difference between a scientific theory and a mathematical theorem.

Friedberg uses sequences to introduce proofs by mathematical induction. Friedberg shows how proofs of mathematical induction work and discusses why they are valid. In the text, however, he tends to use Fermat's method of infinite descent to prove assertions indirectly rather than using direct induction proofs.

While discussing these sequences, Friedberg refers to 1 as a prime number, contrary to the usual definition that a prime number is a positive integer larger than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself. Defining 1 to be prime would violate the assertion of the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic that each positive integer has a unique prime factorization. For instance, if you allow 1 to be prime,

6 = 2 x 3 = 1 x 2 x 3 = 1 x 1 x 2 x 3 = ...

This is problematic, so Friedberg disregards his own assertion that 1 is prime when discussing the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic.

Friedberg then discusses some results from ancient Greece, including the fact that the square root of 2 is irrational, Euclid's theorem that there are infinitely many primes, the sieve of Eratosthenes, perfect numbers, and amicable numbers. He also proves the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic while covering these topics.

During a brief discussion of Diophantine equations, Friedberg discusses how to find and factor Pythagorean triples, that is, triples (x, y, z) of positive integers that satisfy the equation x^2 + y^2 = z^2. A better explanation of how to find Pythagorean triples is given by John Stillwell in his texts Mathematics and its History and Elements of Number Theory. After Friedberg's discussion of the problem, he tackles the more general problem of how to factor numbers of the form x^2 + ny^2, where n is a positive integer. The mathematics used to solve this problem, including modular arithmetic, is quite powerful, which is conveyed by the simple proofs Friedberg provides of results proved with more difficulty earlier in the book and by his proofs of Fermat's Last Theorem for the cases n = 3 and n = 4.

Friedberg concludes the book with a proof of Gauss' proof of the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity. The material on quadratic residues calls upon many of the previous results. However, while there is a table classifying the theorems in the text (albeit without their actual formal statements), the lack of a subject index makes finding the necessary definitions and theorems difficult. Consequently, Friedberg's arguments are more difficult to follow than they need to be.

If you are seeking a basic introduction to the subject, try working through Oyestein Ore's an Invitation to Number Theory (New Mathematical Library), which is accessible to a bright high school student. Ore is also the author of a slightly more advanced text, Number Theory and Its History (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics), which, like Friedberg's text, introduces number theory through its historical development. There are numerous more advanced treatments of the subject, which serve as good introductions. They include, among others, The Higher Arithmetic: An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers by H. Davenport, Elementary Number Theory by Gareth A. Jones and J. Mary Jones, and An Introduction to the Theory of Numbers by Ivan Niven, Herbert S. Zuckerman, and Hugh L. Montgomery.

You have a good handle on sorting out the timeline of your stories and all the relationships of the characters. I can't wait to read the book about Ten. Until then I hope you and you're family are doing well. I read about your diagnosis in your blogs and I'm so sorry people have been rude to you about your deadlines for these stories. Depends on what you're looking for.

If what you're looking for is a book that will truly teach you how to perform erotic and sensual massages, which is what it ostensibly is all about, I would only rate this book three stars; it seems to me that the descriptions of technique would be very difficult for the novice to follow and the pictures are not really sufficient to lead one step-by-step through the process. In this regard, the book is helpful, but not really sufficient; I would rate it two to three stars for this aspect.
If what you're looking for is graphic nude pictures, I would rate it three stars; the pictures are graphic enough, but not really very hard-core.
If, on the other hand, what you want is a book with a wealth of very EROTIC and SENSUAL pictures, with a text that gives you a good excuse for having such a book on hand, this is definitely a five-star effort, and since this is what I believe to be the ACTUAL purpose of this book, I'll bump its overall rating up to four stars.

Mary Ann Hogan, RN, CS, MSN has been a nurse educator for 20 years, currently as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She has taught in diploma, associate degree, and baccalaureate nursing programs. Use of this review book should help simplify your study. To make the most of your valuable study time, also follow these simple but important suggestions:

Use a weekly calendar to schedule study sessions.

Outline the timeframes for all of your activities (home, school, appointments, et c.) on a weekly calendar.
Find the "holes" in your calendar—the times in which you can plan to study. Add study sessions to the calendar at times when you can expect to be mentally alert and follow it!

Create the optimal study environment.

Eliminate external sources of distraction, such as television, telephone, etc.
Eliminate internal sources of distraction, such as hunger, thirst, or dwelling on items or problems that cannot be worked on at the moment.
Take a break for 10 minutes or so after each hour of concentrated study both as a reward and an incentive to keep studying.

Use pre-reading strategies to increase comprehension of chapter material.

Skim the headings in the chapter (because they identify chapter content).
Read the definitions of key terms, which will help you learn new words to comprehend chapter information.
Review all graphic aids (figures, tables, boxes) because they are often used to explain important points in the chapter.

Read the chapter thoroughly but at a reasonable speed.

Comprehension and retention are actually enhanced by not reading too slowly.

TEST TAKING STRATEGIES

Use the following strategies to increase your success on multiple-choice nursing tests or examinations:

Get sufficient sleep and have something to eat before taking a test. Take deep breaths during the test as needed. Remember, the brain requires oxygen and glucose as fuel. Avoid concentrated sweets before a test, however, to avoid rapid upward and then downward surges in blood glucose levels.
Read each question carefully, identifying the stem, the four options, and any key words or phrases in either the stem or options.

Key words in the stem such as "most important" indicate the need to set priorities, since more than one option is likely to contain a statement that is technically correct.
Remember that the presence of absolute words such as "never" or "only" in an option is more likely to make that option incorrect.

Determine who is the client in the question; often this is the person with the health problem, but it may also be a significant other, relative, friend, or another nurse.
Decide whether the stem is a true response stem or a false response stem. With a true response stem, the correct answer will be a true statement, and vice-versa.
Determine what the question is really asking, sometimes referred to as the issue of the question. Evaluate all answer options in relation to this issue, and not strictly to the "correctness" of the statement in each individual option.
Eliminate options that are obviously incorrect, then go back and reread the stem. Evaluate the remaining options against the stem once more.
If two answers seem similar and correct, try to decide whether one of them is more global or comprehensive. If the global option includes the alternative option within it, it is likely that the more global response is the correct answer.

THE NCLEX-RN LICENSING EXAMINATION

The NCLEX-RN licensing examination is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) that ranges in length from 75 to 265 individual (stand-alone) test items, depending on individual performance during the examination. Upon graduation from a nursing program, successful completion of this exam is the gateway to your professional nursing practice. The blueprint for the exam is reviewed and revised every three years by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing according to the results of a job analysis study of new graduate nurses (practicing within the first six months after graduation). Each question on the exam is coded to one Client Need Category and one or more Integrated Concepts and Processes.

Integrated Concepts and Processes

The integrated concepts and processes identified on the NCLEX-RN Test Plan effective April 2001, with condensed definitions, are as follows:

Nursing Process: a scientific problem-solving approach used in nursing practice; consisting of assessment, analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Caring: client-nurse interaction(s) characterized by mutual respect and trust and directed toward achieving desired client outcomes.
Communication and Documentation: verbal and/or nonverbal interactions between nurse and others (client, family, health care team); a written or electronic recording of activities or events that occur during client care.
Cultural Awareness: knowledge and sensitivity to the client's beliefs/values and how these might impact on the client's healthcare experience.
Self-Care: assisting clients to meet their health care needs, which may include maintaining health or restoring function.
Teaching/Learning: facilitating client's acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that lead to behavior change.

I failed my first med-surg exam and got one of the lowest scores in the class. I got onto the internet and was searching for resources to help me study and came across this. I used it to study for the second exam, and at the end of the day I got an email from my teacher congratulating me on getting the top score in the class on the exam. This may not be helpful for everyone but it definitely was for me, I used it as a supplement to my class materials. It breaks down each area of study into simple sections. I used it as a supplement to my class textbook and lectures, as the book did leave out some little things I was required to know (example, for cardiac we needed to know about BNP lab values but it wasn't discussed in this book).

I am convinced that this book was one of the two most influential texts that carried me through my last two semesters of nursing school. I only wish I'd discovered the convenience and proper preparation that NCLEX review books offer even earlier in my nursing school years.

This book is particularly helpful in teaching you concepts that may not have been grasped in lectures and formal textbooks - the rationales are sensibly concise and thorough at the same time. The numerous multiple choice questions are excellent and the answers are provided at the end of each section. This book is not only beneficial for the classroom and exam settings, but fabulous for NCLEX preparation, too. The CD is also well worth it. I recommend the HESI review book for a quick, last minute review, but this book is number one!

Book is in like new visit ion for being used! CD was unopened but when I opened it, it was cracked. Still a great deal for the book. Only reason for the 4 stars was because of the cracked CD which would have been nice to be able to use.

About the Author
John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches educational psychology every year at the undergraduate level. In 2006, John received the University of Texas at Dallas Excellence in teaching award. His research has included publications in the Journal of Educational Psychology that focus on the contextual aspects of affectively-toned cognition and children's self-regulatory behavior as well as teachers' perceptions of children from divorced families. He has been a member of the editorial boards of Developmental Psychology and Child Development. His publications include these exceptional McGraw-Hill texts: Child Development, 13th Ed; Life-Span Development, 14th Edition; Adolescence, 14th Edition; Psychology, 7th Edition; and Educational Psychology, 4th Edition.

If your professor requires the access card for your course, it did not come with this book. I had to return it and find the book and access card elsewhere.

My class is utilizing the full Santrock Life Span textbook. This textbook is a good accompanying textbook. It provides the most important information in Life Span Psychology. I highly recommend this textbook.
