VERY INTERESTING BOOK!!!!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE AZTECS. THIS BOOK PROVIDES AN INTERESTING AND MORE BALANCED ACCOUNT OF THE RISE AND FALL OF THE AZTEC EMPIRE. MR.KOCH TAKES THE READER ON A JOURNEY THAT PROVIDES BETTER INSIGHT INTO THE MOTIVATIONS OF BOTH THE AZTECS AND THE SPANIARDS TO DOMINATE THE LANDS OF MEXICO.

Great story sloppily told

There is no denying that Peter O. Koch is a great storyteller. His newest historical novel is easy to read and offers interesting theories of the motives and actions of the main character of the tragic events in Mexico in the early 16th century. Despite the list of notes and consulted literature, it is certainly not a historical study. The author is shockingly inconsist in the spelling of names, not only Aztec names but Spanish ones as well (has the editor been asleep or what?) and his use of sources is dubious. He used William Prescott's more than 150 years old account of the conquest of Mexico as his most trusted source - as if historians have been in limbo for all these years. The second part of the title of his book is simply wrong, because it is not what the book is about. However, all these faults would be acceptable had the author gone through the trouble of studying the story more in depth. In particular his account of the amount of human sacrifices made by the Aztec is not based on facts and a repetition of a lie started by Cortes and his soldiers. If he would have read Peter Hassler's excellent study 'Menschenopfer bei den Azteken', he would probably have developed more sensitivity to the Aztec side of the story. What we are left with is a book that is entertaining but a mere repetition of many of the falsities that have been told in the last five centuries about the Aztecs as a bunch of murderers who seemed to have enjoyed ripping people's hearts out. The enormous atrocities of the Spaniards perpetrated during and after the conquest and the infectious diseases introduced to the continent have produced a number of casualties many thousandfolds higher. Maybe that is what Koch's next book should be about - just to restore the balance a bit.

Black Elk Speaks

One of my "pet peeves" concerns how history is rewritten to serve special interests. The history of Native Americans has often been twisted to serve such interests, or even worse, simply suppressed. It's really refreshing to read about Native American history from the voice of one who lived it, from an exemplary American who happens to have been a member of the Sioux people. John Niehardt, who went to the trouble of documenting Black Elk's personal history and observations, did a great job in collecting and organizing the information. The book reads well and maintains interest throughout. Being that Black Elk was also a medicine man - and a respected one at that - the book has a ring of spirituality that places it well above mere history. If the reader is also a researcher into what makes our nation great, he cannot overlook this factor in the development of the American heritage.

In Making Mavericks, Frosty talks about his turbulent youth spent under difficult circumstances, with parents who tried to find a positive way to handle a child with a passion for water and a disregard for his own safety. Throughout his life he developed principles to live by, principles that would become the core tenets of his teaching philosophy. About the Author
Richard “Frosty” Hesson has been surfing the northern California waters since 1963 and was among the elite group of surfers who first began riding the colossal waves at Mavericks in the 1980s. He has trained hundreds of young people in the art of surfing. Among his students was Jay Moriarty, a soul surfer, a true champion, and one of the greatest ambassadors to the sport and lifestyle of surfing. Frosty continues to surf and follow his quest to help people achieve and accomplish their goals.

Awesome Book!

This book is about Frosty Hesson's life, but more than that, it's also about how to become a better athlete... I really enjoyed the parts when he coached Jay... It was very interesting when Frosty talked about Mavericks, how it looked, sounded, and how it could pull you under the water for minutes at a time... There were also some great tips on how to better your performance in whatever sport you enjoy.

There were some sad parts as well...

It was also very fun to learn about how Frosty first started surfing. It was a very AWESOME book!! Read it!!

Excellent, Sad Story

I also really liked the movie. Exciting story of a young
man who intensely pursued his passion of finding the biggest surf
wave and his mentor who taught him how to surf and be the
best he could be. The man conquers this wave, only to die
a couple of years later, at about age 22, free diving in the
Maldives. But the book leaves the reader with hope, talking
about how his friends and family honored him by developing
the phrase "Live Like Jay" in memory of his passion and zest for
life. It reminds me of the book Broke Hungry and Happy, the story
of an extreme kayaker, who was dedicated and passionate about following
his dream of kayaking the world, He died at age 24 in a triathlon, but
left his friends and family the same message and hope: follow your
dreams, do what you love, and live life to the max. In his case,
the slogan, "Do it for Dave" came to life.

Great story, great teacher

I'm biased because I have the good fortune to personally know Frosty--in the water and out. But I highly recommend the book because its lessons and insights are powerful and apply to so many moments in life. Bravo!
