Brutal Fantasy (Spoiler Free Review)
By Poisoned Blade
This 928 page omnibus contains three short stories and two full novels chronicling some cataclysmic events in the Warhammer Universe. All of the stories are full of brutal action and epic fantasy warfare.

The book begins with The Bone Cage by Phil Kelly and chronicles the dark fate of nine captured priests as they are taken to Sylvania in a bone cage while surrounded by an army of undead led by Manfred Von Carstein.

With Ice and Sword by Graham McNeill tells the story of a massive assault on Kislev by Chaos Warriors as the survivors of the invasion cling to hope.

The Return of Nagash by Josh Reynolds is the first novel of the omnibus, and continues the story of the captured priests as Manfred Von Carstein and the necromancer Arkhan attempt to summon the ancient Necromancer Nagash! This story is full of violent action and death.

Marienburg's Stand by David Guymer is a short story about a Chaos assault on Marienburg, and its people battling their attackers.

The omnibus ends with The Fall of Altdorf by Chris Wraight. This is the grand finale of the omnibus and covers a vicious chaos invasion that brings the entire empire to its knees.

The entire book is full of graphic violent action, heroic sacrifices, alliances, and battle tactics as massive armies clash on the battlefields of the Empire!

Because this book is full of graphic violence, gore, torture, death, and undeath, it's not for pre-teens. There are too many disturbing scenes. There is no swearing or sex, just a whole lot of violence.

Fans of the Warhammer Series should definitely pick this up! The story is mostly about one massive Chaos Invasion, but it's so intense, it will keep your turning pages.

If you're a fan of heroic fantasy and like brutal action, but aren't familiar with the Warhammer universe, you'll still enjoy this book.

If you're interested in other Warhammer books, check out Malus Darkblade and The Blackhearts. Those are a cut above the rest.

So begins the End Times of the Old World
By Amazon Customer
Three short stories and the first two books of The End Times barely contained within this behemoth of a book. The Return of Nagash is penned by Josh Reynolds and The Fall of Altdorf by Chris Wraight, two writers who I have recently begun to enjoy. Epic fantasy, dark and vile sorcery, foul beasts and excellently detailed settings. Great combat descriptions, and some gut wrenching moments, all make for one awesome start to this series. You can't go wrong with this much action, the sheer amount of excitement in this many pages for this price is nothing to turn your nose at. Not to mention three short stories by a few of the Black Libraries finest authors. Recommended highly.

Great Read
By Justencredible
I am a big Warhammer fan and player. The End Times is the biggest event in the game and it has taken several novels and thousands of pages to get to this point. I play Total War: Warhammer (not a plug) and many of the playable characters in the game are featured in these books. It was nice to see these individuals fleshed out and a solid back story provided. That being said, they are actually really good books. Well written and entertaining. I cannot wait to read the next two Omnibuses to see the End Times come.

Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, Vol. 13, by G. Johannes Botterweck, Helmer Ringgren, Heinz-Josef Fabry

This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies.

Beginning with 'ābh ('āb), “father,” and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis.

The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word’s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas.

TDOT’s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work.

This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.

Not Unless You Read Hebrew
By Patricia L Gauthier
I returned this book as soon as I perused it. If you can read Hebrew, you might like it. If not, it is difficult to navigate. Although I have a large theological library and am usually pleased with my purchases, I could not figure out the organizational system of this dictionary. I hope to find something else instead.

Review
Towards the end of her life, realizing that her work was already becoming forgotten history, Ida B. Wells wrote the massive, unfinished memoirs that form Crusade for Justice. An outspoken and determined woman with seemingly limitless energy, Ida B. Wells began her crusade against the oppression of black people in 1884, when, at the age of sixteen, she sued the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for evicting her from a first class car. A teacher and journalist, she began a one-woman anti-lynching campaign after a close friend was murdered. She traveled throughout England and later in the United States gaining support; got married; began the first clubs for black women in the US; started a reading room, shelter, and employment service for black men in Chicago; investigated race riots; and had six children. Her children and husband (she refers to him as "Mr. Barnett") remain almost invisible in this book, but what Crusade for Justice lacks in domestic detail, it makes up for in personal opinion. Ida B. Wells was a forthright woman who worked with many famous leaders of the early twentieth century, and she does not hesitate either to blast her opponents or to praise those who earn her respect - including President Wilson, Booker T. Washington, Susan B. Anthony, and Frederick Douglass. Her history is packed with facts not often taught in schools and filled with the fervor of a woman who spent her life proving that one person can and must make a difference. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Erica Bauermeister

An early voice
By FrKurt Messick
I read 'Crusade for Justice: The Autobiography of Ida B. Wells' as part of a class in ethical and prophetic witness for seminary. This was, frankly, not the kind of book I was likely to read apart from a class assignment. But I am very glad to have been given the opportunity -- sometimes things we have to do are in fact good for us!
Ida B. Wells was an African-American woman of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. She was born and grew up in the South, born in Mississippi during the Civil War. It is significant the impact of the legacy of slavery on her life -- she recounts how her parents, who were married as slaves, remarried each other as free persons after the war. Wells was a determined and intelligent woman -- her parents died while she was young, yet old enough to be left with the responsibility of her younger brothers and sisters. At the age of 14 she found herself at the head of a household with five younger children.
She worked hard to make sure that her education did not suffer, and eventually (a rarity for women of any colour in America at the time) went to work for a newspaper.
In an incident that foreshadowed Rosa Parks, she was once removed from a train for sitting in the wrong section, despite her ownership of a valid ticket for the seat. She sued the railroad and won (newspaper headlines read 'Darky Damsel Gets Damages' without concern for the racist tone), but the judgment was overturned on appeal, and she later discovered her lawyers had been paid off by the railroads, and the appellate judges had thought she was just being uppity to pursue the matter.
Such was the state of the African-American community that none came to her assistance as she pursued this fight. This made her more determined to organise and fight.
Several of her newspaper partners and other friends in Memphis were lynched for these efforts, and Wells was threatened herself, and left the South, but did not give up her crusade. Where ever she went, through cities and towns in the North as well as over to Europe (where, she said, she felt like she was treated as a real human being equal with others for the first time) she decried the injustice of laws which dismissed charges or gave light sentences if victims were coloured, and prosecuted more strongly, gave out harsher sentences, or even resorted to lynch mobs if the defendant (who was often not guilty) was coloured.
'She fought a lonely and almost single-handed fight, with the single-mindedness of a crusader, long before men or women of any race entered the arena, and the measure of success she achieved goes far beyond the credit she has been given the history of the country.'
She continued speaking and publishing up to her death in 1931. She was never afraid of making herself unpopular, and often upset the African-American community by being critical of their complacency (especially the upper and middle classes). She became unpopular by standing against the military service during World War I, because of prejudicial and discriminatory practices, and never quite recovered in popular esteem from that.
But Wells had courage and determination that is rare in persons, male or female, of any colour, of any time, to take on such a task as the exposition and combat of lynching in the South during the post-Civil War decades. Talking directly with governors and even a president, Wells made her voice heard, and it was a difficult hearing in a difficult time.

Redundant read is not important but the life of Wells is
By JP&BA Flaten
Even though some of the material in this book is redundant, this is an opportunity to read primary source material about the actions and reactions of a woman many of us know little about. Learning about Ida B. Wells in the first person puts you into the times in which she lived. There is no way a biography can give you the same experience. This is a book I would recommend to anyone wanting to understand this period of our history and the personalities--their strengths and limits--that dominated the crusades of those times. I like knowing about Wells' frailties as well as her strengths and the insights that she shared. And I like hearing her viewpoints about other leaders of her time. The three star ratings may say something about the readability of the book, but not about what you gain by staying the course.

Ida B. Wells
By Breanna Holm
The autobiography of Ida B. Wells gives a firsthand experience into the life during the time of Gilded Age and the Progressive era. It is an eye opening story about the true injustices and the lynchings that get left out of many history books. Her fight for equality and justice extended overseas as well, in hopes to put pressure on American to change the way it was working. I found this book really enjoyable to read because of her ability to be humorous at some points as well as straight forward at others. I read this book for a History class and out of all the ones I read, this one was my favorite. Her life story and her commitment to change are inspiring.

Modern Geometries: Non-Euclidean, Projective, and Discrete Geometry (2nd Edition), by Michael Henle

Engaging, accessible, and extensively illustrated, this brief, but solid introduction to modern geometry describes geometry as it is understood and used by contemporary mathematicians and theoretical scientists. Basically non-Euclidean in approach, it relates geometry to familiar ideas from analytic geometry, staying firmly in the Cartesian plane. It uses the principle geometric concept of congruence or geometric transformation--introducing and using the Erlanger Program explicitly throughout. It features significant modern applications of geometry--e.g., the geometry of relativity, symmetry, art and crystallography, finite geometry and computation. Covers a full range of topics from plane geometry, projective geometry, solid geometry, discrete geometry, and axiom systems. For anyone interested in an introduction to geometry used by contemporary mathematicians and theoretical scientists.

From the Inside Flap
PREFACE What Is Modern Geometry?

For most of recorded history, Euclidean geometry has dominated geometric thinking. Today, however, while Euclidean geometry is still central to much engineering and applied science, other geometries also playa major role in mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry and physics. This book surveys these geometries, including non-Euclidean metric geometries (hyperbolic geometry and elliptic geometry) and nonmetric geometries (for example, projective geometry), The study of such geometries complements and deepens the knowledge of the world contained in Euclidean geometry.

Modern geometry is a fascinating and important subject. Above all, it is pure mathematics filled with startling results of great beauty and mystery. It also lies at the foundation of modern physics and astronomy, since non-Euclidean geometries appear to be the geometry of physical reality in several different ways: on the surface of the earth, as well as in the universe as a whole at very small and very large scales. Finally, modern geometry plays an important role in the intellectual history of Western civilization. Its development, in the nineteenth century, radically altered our conception of physical and geometric space, creating a revolution in philosophical, scientific, artistic and mathematical thought comparable to the Copernican revolution, which changed forever the relationship between science, mathematics, and the real world. The main purpose of this book is to describe the mathematics behind this revolution. Analytic versus Synthetic Geometry

Despite its crucial influence on modern scientific thought, non-Euclidean is not well known. In part, this is due to the general neglect of geometry in the mathematics curriculum. However, another factor is the axiomatic format in which geometry is usually presented. Axiomatic geometry (also called synthetic geometry) is a legacy of the Greeks and suited admirably their view of geometry. However, it has no particular relevance to the modern viewpoint and indeed tends to obscure connections among the real world, geometry, and other parts of mathematics. In an age in which applications are paramount, there is no reason why geometry alone among mathematical subjects should be singled out for a quasi-archaic treatment that conceals its practical value. An axiomatic approach is particularly inappropriate with the current generation of mathematics students, since they have had only the briefest exposure to it in high school geometry classes. It makes much more sense to base a geometry course on analytic methods, with which students are much more familiar.

The purpose of this book is to provide a brief, but solid, introduction to modern geometry using analytic methods. The central idea is to relate geometry to familiar ideas from analytic geometry, staying firmly in the Cartesian plane and building on skills already known and extensively practiced there. The principal geometric concept used is that of congruence or geometric transformation. Thus, the Erlanger Programm, fundamental to modern geometry, is introduced and used explicitly throughout. The hope is that the resulting treatment will be accessible to all who are interested in geometry.

At the same time, synthetic methods should not be neglected. Hence, we present (in Part VI) axiom systems for Euclidean and absolute geometry. Presenting alternative systems demonstrates how axiomatics can clarify logical relationships among geometric concepts and among different geometries. Use of the Book

This book is intended for an undergraduate geometry course at the sophomore level or higher. Parts I, II, and VII are the heart of the book. The remaining parts are almost independent of each other. They include material on solid geometry, projective geometry, discrete geometry, and axiom systems. (See the Dependency Chart on page ix.) These parts can be added to a syllabus, depending on the time available, and the interests of the instructor and students. In this way, a wide variety of different courses can be constructed. Prerequisites

A previous acquaintance with (high school) Euclidean geometry and analytic geometry is needed to read this book. Specific Euclidean topics used include the sum of the angles of a triangle, the congruence of triangles, and the theory of parallels. From analytic geometry, the reader needs to be familiar with Cartesian and polar coordinates, and to be able to graph straight lines and circles from their equations (including parametric equations). Some familiarity with vector operations (addition and scalar multiplication) is also useful, and some linear algebra is used (but only in later chapters on projective geometry and discrete geometry).

This book is not great.
By A Customer
First of all, there are numerous minor errors in the printing; they get to be annoying at best, and extremely confusing at their worst.
The book also is too much of an overview--it makes a good introduction but a poor reference text. It is also very poorly indexed, which can make it hard to find things. The exercises are also poor--many new concepts are introduced in the exercises at the end of the chapters.
The writing is actually pretty good, for the most part. I think that the stuff that is explained in the book is explained well in most places, and the author does a very good job of tieing things together and bringing in historical background and significance of the topics being discussed.
I lastly might add that the name is very misleading--the geometries described in this book were mostly discovered over 100 years ago--there is nothing drastically "modern" about them.
Overall, this book was not prepared for being published--it needs a new edition to correct errors and tie up loose ends.

Protest: A Cultural Introduction to Social Movements (Cultural Sociology), by James M. Jasper

Every day around the world there are dozens of protests both large and small. Most groups engage the local police, some get media attention, and a few are successful. Who are these people? What do they want? What do they do to get it? What effects do they ultimately have on our world?

In this lively and compelling book, James Jasper, an international expert on the cultural and emotional dimensions of social movements, shows that we cannot answer these questions until we bring culture squarely into the frame. Drawing on a broad range of examples, from the Women's Movement to Occupy and the Arab Spring, Jasper makes clear that we need to appreciate fully the protestors' points of view - in other words their cultural meanings and feelings - as well as the meanings held by other strategic players, such as the police, media, politicians, and intellectuals. In fact, we can't understand our world at all without grasping the profound impact of protest.

Protest: A Cultural Introduction to Social Movements is an invaluable and insightful contribution to understanding social movements for beginners and experts alike.

Review

James Jasper's Protest is a thorough, thoughtful, sophisticated, wide-ranging, and--if that weren't enough--wise handbook on, and for, the social movements on which the world so dearly counts.
Todd Gitlin, Columbia University

In interpretations of social movements, emotions have often been pitted against strategic thinking, feelings against cognition, agency against structures. In this volume, James Jasper brilliantly shows instead how all these various elements are combined in the emergence and evolution of protest.
Donatella della Porta, European University Institute

Understanding protest movements with ease
By Amanda Gonzalez
Thinking about getting involved in your very own protest movement? Then this is probably a book that you should consider reading. Jasper provides a thorough and comprehensive analysis of what the modern social movement entails. It is an essential read in even attempting to understand the waves of social and political protest. It is extremely well documented and the notes taken are helpful and meticulous. In his novel, he explains the inception of social movements, why people attach themselves to social movements, and why these movements will often fail and analyzes those that are successful. What I enjoy most about this book is that it puts personal experiences into a more comprehensive/ understandable context. Great for acamdemic and undergraduate students.

Thoughtful Sociology Text--or Protest Organizers' Handbook
By Lynne E.
If you're thinking of starting, or getting involved in, a contemporary protest movement, then you probably ought to read PROTEST: A CULTURAL INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL MOVEMENTS. It presents a thoughtful, complete analysis of modern social movements, and is valuable for the "dilemma" sidebars that describe the inevitable problems that accompany organized protest movements, and that must be dealt with by protest organizers.

The dilemmas are:

Janus (do you encourage a collective identity that emphasizes members' similarities, or their differences?);

Dirty hands (will you use deception or money or other suspect tactics to achieve your ends?);

Character work (will you portray your protesters as victims or heroes? will you portray your opponents as villains or clowns?);

Innovation (how far or fast will you push societal boundaries?);

Media (how will you use the media to get attention without being portrayed badly or suffering backlash?);

Organization (how will you keep rules aimed at sustaining the organization from becoming ends in themselves that will destroy your mission?);

Extension (how do you find the right size for your movement to be maximally effective?);

Naughty or nice (how do you choose between tactics that make you appear morally upright and tactics that make you appear stronger and more threatening?);

Identity (how will you manage the collective identity so that subgroups won't split off?);

Band of brothers (how will you keep face-to-face bonds from crowding out the larger group?);

Powerful allies (how can you keep politicians, etc. from twisting your movement to their own needs instead of using their power on your behalf?);

Audience segregation (if you convey different messages to different audiences, how can you avoid being seen as deceitful?); and

Articulation (how do you avoid demobilization resulting from achieving a clearly stated goal?).

PROTEST is, in essence, a textbook for a sociology course--more analytical than practical--though it also functions to some extent as a protest organizer's handbook. The reason I was interested in this book, was that I hoped it would provide some insight into local, recurring protests in Oakland, CA (e.g., Occupy Oakland, multiple ad hoc protests over police brutality in Oakland and other cities), and perhaps offer some explanations for why these protests so often result in looting and vandalism of local businesses. Unfortunately, this topic ("naughty or nice") was barely touched on, and the discussion of Occupy Oakland was extremely superficial.

As a sociology text, PROTEST probably merits 5 stars. However, it was too theoretical and "above the fray" to be of value to me. I rate PROTEST at 3 stars ("It's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

This book has a lot of great content. It is one of the most difficult books to read that I have ever picked up in my life. it is just crazy difficult to follow along in this book. I had to get it for one of my Criminal Justice classes in college and the book was way worse than the course and the course was tough. it dose have a lot of great information though.
