This is a must book for Histology

I really enjoyed the book. It goes very well with Histology courses.It gives you feeling of three dimensional pictures of real cells like photography. Since it is like a photography, it shows external views not the section throughs but you get hundered times better understanding of the structures. just look at scanning electron picture examples in your typical cell books. This book is full of them and not just plain pictures but with some explanations similar to Histology books.

Good but Old

The use of "dyes" to photograph living cells in high detail has made this book outdated. None the less, it is a great starting point to look at body cell composition.

an indispensable reference

This is a fantastic visual reference book for anybody interested in microscopic and/or macroscopic anatomy. Most of the major systems are covered, although the tissue samples are usually taken from small mammals. The range of magnification is great, and provides the reader with a clear concept of the structure and function of a given organ.
I'm a professional medical illustrator with a library of over 300 books, and this is one of only a few "desert island" books - ones that I wouldn't want to be without. I believe anybody with an interest in the way we're made will find it fascinating.

Second half was better than the first half

The Greek Millionaire's Secret Child by Catherine Spencer is a Harlequin Presents book. I thought the second half was better than the first half. The first half had too much dialogue and was slow in getting the chemistry started between hero and heroine. Nurse Emily Tylor comes to Greece to take care of Pavlos Leonidas. She meets up with his estranged son Niko who think that Emily is a gold-digger out to get her father's vast fortune. So he decides to seduce Emily himself to show her true colors. It doesn't take too long before he realizes that she is not a gold-digger, but is actually a very compassionate, giving young lady. Niko though won't commit to anything long-term because he likes to live life dangerously, flying all over the world on goodwill/mercenary missions. He doesn't want a wife and family to worry about him, plus he likes what he does, and doesn't want to give it up even for Emily. Emily leaves Greece and returns home not realizing that she is pregnant with his baby. But she has to go back to Greece when Pavlos's condition takes a turn for the worse. This is story had some very tender, heart-breaking moments. I particularly liked the hero, Niko. He held the story together for me. 4 stars!

Close but no cigar

I gave this story two stars and I'll explain why. I didn't necessarily dislike the story line but I found that there was a lot of unnecessary dialogue between the hero and the heroine Emily and Nikolaos, they had these verbal sparring matches that were neither exciting or funny, rather just long winded in my opinion. Also this is the first time I have experienced a wishy washy hero. Niko seemed so indecisive about whether he was pursing Emily for his own nefarious reasons or whether it was do to a genuine attraction for her, and because he couldn't seem to decide his motives, I as a reader was confused and frustrated.

The premise of this story is that Niko meets Emily after she becomes his 80 year old father's nurse who has suffered a serious fall while visiting Canada, along with the fact that the father is generally in poor health to begin with. Niko is instantly suspicious of Emily with no real reason for it; he believes that she is a gold-digger. Why? Because his father seems to like her and the two have a cordial, friendly and warm relationship, which is something Niko seems to be lacking with his own father. The general coldness and distain that father and son show each other is just horrible, they neither have a kind or considerate word for one another despite the fact that the older man is pretty much coming to the end of his life rapidly.

Emily essentially becomes piggy in the middle she has to show consideration and care for her employer who has hired her to do a job, while at the same time she is deeply attracted to said employers son; who he virtually hates with a passion. It's a true mess to say the least and to add into the mix as I stated earlier Niko isn't sure from one moment to the next whether or not he sees Emily as saint or sinner. The only redeeming thing about this book was that from the start Emily never shied away from expressing the attraction she left for Niko, when asked how she felt she told him flat out.

Perhaps I am the wrong person to give a more objective review of this book because I didn't finish it, which is a rarity with me and books, but in this instance I just couldn't make myself. All the volleying and all over the place and long winded take a year and a day dialogue between these two, not to mention the complete loathing and animosity that Niko and his father showed towards one another combined to make this story a complete turn off. I didn't feel any desire to continue it and see how they reached their "inevitable harlequin happy ending" for me it would have rang false when for the first 100 or so pages each character is either overly suspicious of the other or they hate each others guts.

I hope someone else has a better review and view point then I did. I truly hate to give a negative review if I can help it. Happy Reading......

Super book!

The Greek Millionaire's Secret Child by Catherine Spencer is a wonderful story about two people who fall in love and then have to work to overcome the very real conflict that threatens that love. Emily comes to Greece as a nurse to Niko's injured father. The old man is a difficult patient but Emily is equally strong-willed and they have grown fond of each other. She soon discovers that Niko and his father do not get along and never have. It breaks her heart to see the animosity between them. Niko is suspicious of Emily initially, thinking her a gold digger after his father's money, but soon comes to see her as she really is: a competent nurse and a kind-hearted woman. They fall in love, but Emily's need for security (because of a difficult childhood) and Niko's need for adventure (he risks his life to fly aid planes to war-torn countries) do not allow for a happy future. The various relationships are realistic and involving. It's refreshing to read a romance in which the characters discuss their problems rather than let a flimsy misunderstanding keep them apart. Flawless, elegant writing and the lush setting also enhace the story. This book is a winner.

sipping tea with Lin

I am actually disapointed to find this book in wide circulation. A friend had introduced me to an old copy of 'The importance of Living' on the balcony of a mountain home in the Blue mountains, Sydney, Australia. The edition he showed me resembled a holy text, with its simple red cover and black insignia-character. On opening the cover of Yutang's book, the reader must peruse the contents. This is an intriguing read in itself. Chapters such as 'on having strong muscles' and the classics 'on tea and friendship' and 'on Luck' illustrate Yutang's unorthodox approach to life and philosophy. After reading Yutang, after immersing myself in his slow and simple prose style, I decided, as I am sure many before me have, to live my life by his recommendations, to treat sleep, tea, friendship and leisure as Yutang himself would. So profound was my reaction to 'The importance of living', that I began to reproduce selections of text on my computer. I printed sections describing firecrackers and stuck them beside the front door. I 'blu-tacked' a section about the merits of lying sideways in bed just above my pillow. Soon the house was littered by the floating philosophy of Lin Yutang. I lived in that house for nearly one year. In that time, Yutang philosophy carried me through abject poverty. There is also reason to believe that my adopted Yutangisms were a major factor in the genesis of a whirl-wind and ultimately life-long relationship. Basically, read Yutang's wise words on life, adopt or reject his ideas after long, easy, tea-drenched contemplation. I gaurantee you will not emerge unchanged.

Living life without fighting it!

I have a soft spot for this book because I recently learned that this was my grandfather's favourite book ever. And as he was born in 1900, was a silent man and left us a huge library, I simply had to read this book to see what it was about.
Mr. Yutang is definitely a nice person. It would have been a pleasure to have some conversation with him.
I know that some of his beliefs can seem quite strange, in this crazy 21st. century days we are living, but in a certain way I believe he embodies the Chinese tradition of letting things pass instead of fighting with them.
This book has some funny passages, such as the one where he describes his passion for walking in the rain and how he later would lie to explain to people why he was all wet...
It certainly packs a different approach to life and it is interesting to learn his opinions about our western life styles. And having lived in America, he never condemns any of it, but simply points some absurds and curiosities that couldn't be easily accepted by a chinese.
There is certainly some to be learned from his culture of appreciation and his delightful essays about many aspects of our lives that would have simply passed unnoticed otherwise.

Top Bedside Reading Material

I actually found this book whilst browsing the shelves in a thrift shop in a village in England. I liked the look of the title and it cost me the princely sum of 50 pence sterling. What a find - Yutang's words of wisdom often comfort when the world seems like its turning upside down. This book has been on many of my travels, I often recommend it to friends hoping they'll get as much out of the prose as I did. In a Global World that seems to be moving ever faster - its a pleasure to take time off, relax and philosophize with the Author. This book is never far from hand, I often re-read chapters when in need of inspiration. Kick of the shackles, open up the pages, spark one up and spend some time alone - you'll be a wiser and more tolerant human being for having read this book.

Entertaining and Enjoyable, for Deep Purple fans new and old.

Being the world's biggest Deep Purple fan as I am, I thought I knew everything about them. How wrong I was proven when I read this book; A Matter of Fact, by Jerry Bloom, a newly published Deep Purple book about facts & fun trivia of the group spanning their entire career.
What an entertaining read with loads of great never before seen information & pictures, also includes a nice list near the end of some of Deep Purple's rarest albums and LPs.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any Deep Purple fan or collector, and it even separates the fact from fiction.
It's not all Just about MK 2 & Ritchie Blackmore. Jerry Bloom is open to writing about all of the different line ups of the band & even features a hefty couple of chapters on Deep Purple MK 5 with Joe Lynn Turner to the current line up, MK 8 with Steve Morse & Don Airey who still tour today and the book has information from up to the most modern point in time the present. It even puts you in the place of the band's unfortunate turmoil and problems with Blackmore from the 80's and 90s with other stories from people like the band's manager, Colin Heart who also witnessed some of the tragic events unfold first hand causing the original line up to split in '93. It feels like you are there really.
It is a highly educational and entertaining book which I really enjoyed throughout. It will even surprise the biggest hardcore Deep Purple fans ! Guaranteed !

Somewhat outdated, but still an excellent introduction

Some of the scholarship here is a bit outdated (for instance, the contention that Eusebius of Caesara and St. Epiphanius of Salamis were proto-iconoclasts has been thoroughly dismantled in recent years) but this is still the standard and the classic text on early Christian history, covering roughly the period of the Apostolic Fathers (late first century) to the Seventh Ecumenical Council (eight century) and introducing all of the major themes of Church history along the way, including theology, liturgy, art, major figures, etc. The focus throughout is primarily on Western Christianity but the author is also familiar with Eastern practice and generally takes a balanced approached. If anyone is interested in learning more about Church history but has very little knowledge of it already, this book is an excellent place to start.
