Overpriced, not enough content

Simonoff's text is at best an overview of the methods in non-parametric kernel smoothing techniques as of its writing. However, the text is very short, and omits any sort of aids to actually understand how some of the asymptotic properties were derived, for which outside sources are required. This was particularly troublesome as before hand I had never done any asymptotic expansions, so not seeing how it was done was confusing without class lectures or supplementary texts. In the later category, Hansen's nonparametric lecture notes and Qi Li's "Nonparametric Econometrics," seem to cover mostly the same material while not omitting so much detail. On these grounds, I would rate the book at best a 2/5 stars.

HOWEVER, Simonoff does have interesting "extra tidbits," at the end of each chapter which discuss non-trivial extensions, additional work, and history that is not covered in some of the supplementary materials mentioned above, and is a unique addition to some of the other statistical reference and text books I've bought recently, for which the book gets an additional star. However, almost on pure content grounds I am still stuck between removing it for being charged $180+ for the text.

This book is very good. The motivation for the issues on nonparametric methods a excellent. The only reason why I haven't given it 5 stars is that I would like to see more precise proofs.

Dense, mostly unreadable

This book is probably useful as a reference for practitioners. (Or was useful -- as another reviewer points out, much material is dated.) As a text or learning tool it is not particularly good. While I understand that my disppointment was probably from a misunderstanding of the books target, in the sections that I have read, the author sometimes suffers from failing to see the forest for the trees.

Excellent review

I find Satyajit Das's books to be quite comprehensive. Indeed, the material is encyclopedic in its coverage of swaps, derivatives and other structured products.

Mr. Das provides original source material on swap structures and paces the reader through difficult material with ease. Anybody who is willing to spend the time will find the material well written from structurer, marketer and client perspectives. This makes it very useful for trading desks of investment banks and hedge funds. The level of detail may appear daunting at first but is necessary to acquire knowledge in this specialized field.

I have bought most of his books including the current boxed set of 4 books that covers newer areas of credit and interest rate derivatives, and structured products. I am therefore at a loss to see where one of the reviewers has given him a poor rating which I feel is wholly undeserved!

I'd encourage Mr. Das to continue his prolific output as it serves a real need in the investment community.

This is a very comprehensive book on this subject. Covers all the aspects of Swaps and related issues. Although, some isues like BIS guidelines are changed since the last publication of this book, it gives good idea of the regulatory and taxation issues of swaps & other related derivatives. This book can be used as a reference in this field. (not for first time reader of this topic)

Aging baby boomers are becoming acutely aware of their own memory lapses. Is each case incipient Alzheimer's or just a benign "senior moment"? The increase in age-related memory impairment has produced a host of new books on preventing (or slowing) memory loss based on the latest scientific knowledge of brain and memory. In Saving Your Brain, Victoroff, director of the neurobehavioral program at Ranchos Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, challenges the theory that Alzheimer's and similar memory disorders are abnormal responses to aging. Instead, he proposes that age-related memory loss may actually be a natural part of aging. Drawing on his clinical experiences and reviews of some 14,000 research studies, his fascinating treatise explores the evolution and function of the human brain and the many things that can damage the delicate balances that enable us to think and function. The author suggests numerous changes that can prevent memory loss and improve brain function: avoiding even minor head injuries and exposure to chemicals (including pesticides and aluminum in drinking water), increasing physical activity, eating a low-fat diet, and keeping mentally sharp with lifelong learning and other mentally challenging activities while avoiding the mind-numbing effects of television. In The Memory Bible, neuroscientist Small, director of UCLA's Memory Clinic and Center on Aging and the author of Parentcare, has compiled an amusing and informative array of self-tests, puzzles, quizzes, and other techniques to enhance memory performance. He also draws upon current scientific advancements in memory and recommends brain-saving lifestyle changes similar to Victoroff's. Small's approach is entertaining yet practical, and the numerous case histories are appealing, but some of his memory-enhancing techniques (like the "peg method" for remembering numerical sequences) seem too cumbersome to be useful. Both titles deserve a place in aging and self-help collections along with Guy McKann and Marilyn Albert's Keep Your Brain Young, which explores the relationship between brain health and physical well-being in later years. Possibly Useful, with Caveats

I have some, probably age-related, memory impairment. My medical team recommended this book for its practical information on how to preserve and enhance memory. There were a couple of ideas that I had not run across before, and some assessments that provided a contrast to my day-to-day experience. A substantial amount of information (for example, the role of glia cells in information processing in the brain) has appeared since the date of the book, and its lack makes some of the discussions of mechanisms seem incomplete; the rate at which new information is appearing makes such early dating inevitable at present, however,. On the whole, the material seems useful, especially to those who have not been exposed to the concepts and techniques earlier, or who need review and prodding to apply what they know to their own case.

Good information

I have started and stopped the book several times, mostly because of time constraints around the holidays. Have yet to complete the book .. What I like about the book is that it is readable in small portions, the tenor is positive, it is helpful in understanding what's going on in our heads and also helps in understanding our older family members and what they may be concerned about. Maybe more from this end when I finally finish the book.

One last thing.. think I'd purchase this in paper rather than on line for ease in making notes.

Exactly as the title states

Truly as the title suggests, THE seminal book for all lay folks on Memory improvement. It is the first in a series of similar books by Dr. Small. It is very easy to read and keeps your interest. The methods described definitely work. Dr. Small is the real deal, bonafide professor at UCLA. This is NOT an infomercial type book but highly useful without commercial representation. As many people, I have memory problems and Dr. Small's methods definite work for improvement but not perfection. They require a little practice like all skills.
