About the Author

Janet Lee is an Emmy Award-winning television show producer, styling and producing for leading home decorators, entrepreneurs, and designers such as Martha Stewart, B. Smith, and Thom Filicia. During her ten years as a senior producer for The Oprah Show, she worked closely with such style greats as Nate Berkus. She has also been a home decor producer for Lifetime Television's Our Home and was featured on camera as the show's weekend decorator, demonstrating chic, easy DIY projects. She has also appeared on CBS's The Early Show, where she demonstrated her high-end-for-less decor ideas. Now a freelance producer, she lives in New York City.

This textbook is one of the best I have had to read from so far in my college experience. It has very helpful chapter introductions that define and explain any terms that are used in that particular chapter. It also includes several different media into these introductions, with many having comic strips, surveys, or polls. It really helped me understand what feminism really is and why it is important. If you are dreading having to work with this book for one of your classes, dont! Some of the readings are long and dry but very informational. Most though, are enjoyable to read, whether they are poetry, real life experiences, or web articles. Definitely recommend this book!

Pretty good textbook, not too dry, very helpful!

My husband had to get this for a college class and it has been very useful for the quizzes he's had to take as well as the writing reflections. Pretty well organized and accessible. Not too dense or dry like so many textbooks can be, interesting content for those already well versed in the subject. Yet for those that are somehow not in the know of the struggle for equality still to this day for women and many groups of people it is an eye opener.

Personally I like the cover too but in the end it's the content of course that matters most!

It's a textbook but a fairly good one. Renting it is how we did it and that seems to be the best way to go unless you intend to go into this as a major then you may want to own a copy.

About the Author
SAFA KASAP is currently a Professor of Electronic Materials and Devices in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He obtained the B.S.E.E. (1976), M.S. (1978), and Ph.D. (1983) degrees from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, specializing in amorphous semiconductors and optoelectronics. In 1996 he was awarded the D.Sc. (Engineering) degree from London University for his research contributions to materials science in electrical engineering. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Materials. His research interests are in amorphous semiconductors, noise in electronic devices, photoconductors, photodetectors, X-ray image detectors, laser-induced transient photocnductivity and related topics, with more than 100 refereed journal publications in these areas.

This is the BEST!!!

I am a graduate student at Columbia University working on Photonics. I am very happy to find the second edition on Amazon.

After reading it through, I have to say this book is PERFECT, totally deserve a five-star! The book itself is very well written, the explanations are clear and precise, which make this subject very easy to understand. It introduced the basic but adequate science background of each type of opto-devices, come with nice figures, great examples and intuitive analysis. There are also plenty of practice problems and additional topics allow the reader the expand and deepen the understanding of each subject. The book also includes lot of excellent historical photographs, which make it more enjoyable to read.

I happen to find out that lots of my colleagues from Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, etc. used this book as their Photonics textbook as well. Now, it becomes one of the very important references on my book shelf and I am highly recommend this book to others who want to join the field of Photonics. After you read it, you won't regret to have it!

Definitely the best textbook on Optoelectronics and Photonics

The first edition of this book was a pleasure to read. It was a 5 star textbook. When I discovered that the second edition had just come out, I could not wait to get hold of the second edition.

Well, the second edition is about 530 pages. Although it is thicker than the first edition, it is still thinner and more usable than other optoelectronic texts. The second edition has many modern topics as well. It seems as if the author has rewritten everything and redrawn all the diagrams and redone all the examples and problems. It feels and looks like a totally new book. My impression is that second edition looks very professional, and has beautiful clear illustrations and photographs throughout the book. It is obvious that it has been prepared with deep dedication to detail. It is full of hundreds of practical examples and solved problems. There are also various historical anecdotes and biographies of famous scientists in photonics. I found these most enjoyable to read. For example, I had not realized Dr. Kapany played a key role in the early development of optical fibers. The author seems to have dug and found some of the most interesting photos and illustrations I have seen in any book. The explanations are exceptionally clear - actually this is typical of this author. The level of mathematics is about right at the third or fourth year university level. Indeed, the author never seems to avoid getting into long derivations but provides a clear explanation of the principles that are involved in the equation derivation. He then applies the equation in a practical example using typical values. It is not however a qualitative textbook. It is a proper undergraduate book. There is still sufficient rigor and the balance is just right for undergraduate students to read the book, thoroughly enjoy it, and understand what is photonics. I particularly liked his treatment of erbium doped fiber amplifiers, photonic crystals and holey fibers with beautiful images.

In my view, the second edition looks nothing like the first edition. There are probably twice as many topics and the coverage is across the whole of field of photonics, including photonic crystals. What I liked is the "Additional Topics" at the end of each chapter where more advanced topics are gradually introduced. Moreover, the second edition has much better presentation of the material in a clear and understandable way with numerous illustrations. Just about every page has one or two illustrations. I would rate the book 5 stars but why did the publisher chose not to have this book on photonics in color? All books on photonics should be in color. I'm planning on getting the e-version as well for my Reader. Overall, if you are looking for an excellent, readable, modern book on photonics with hundreds of examples, and hundreds of beautiful illustrations and photographs, you would not regret buying this second edition. In my view, it maintains its 5-star rating as the best book at the undergraduate level.

The best textbook in this field

This book is quite simply unsurpassed for teaching upper undergraduate engineers or physics majors all that they will need to know at this stage in their careers on the interlinked topics of Optoelectronics and Photonics. In fact it is no stretch to say that graduate students will also have a lot to gain from reading this tome, as Prof Kasap's clarity of explanation is second to none. I used to say this about the first edition and continued to recommend this book to my colleagues. Now I will have to do so even more strenuously as this new updated edition is even better.

The text and diagrams are extremely clear and the availability of PowerPoint slides, solution manuals and support material for lecturers is invaluable.

Buy this book read it. Regardless of whether you are an instructor or a student, I guarantee you will learn something!

**I received this book in exchange for an honest review**

Gawd dammit all.

I loved this installment all the way until the end. The end is FEELS. There better be another one. It can't just end that way. Well, I suppose it could, but it shouldn't. I need more.

In Too Deep is excellent. Now that we know most of the characters, there wasn't as much time dedicated to getting to know everyone, and more action time, which was what I was missing from the first book. This is the second series of read of Sherry's and I think it's safe to say I'm hooked on her writing.

No complaints and I can't really add more without being spoilerly. Let's just say I was a little iffy about someone "new" (quotations because they are introduced in the first book), but I ended up rooting for them early on.

The drama is real and actually enjoyable. Sometimes drama can be eye roll worthy, but not this stuff. Gahhh. I just really need more.

A Brilliant YA read - totally suitable for Adults! V""V

In Too Deep is the second book that follows the story of Farris but with a new mystery to solve. It is no secret that I love work from this author but this time she has really out done herself. Without giving spoilers there are things in this book that I can honestly say I have never seen in YA fiction before. UGH it is SO hard not to spill the beans here but let me say when you get to that bit you will be GLAD that I didn't. It is one of those moments that you just HAVE to read, and then reread because you aren't sure you read it correctly ... and then if you are anything like me - spit your drink across your reading device!

All fun aside this is a fast paced YA novel with the sassy writing style that Sherry is well known for. Fans of her previous series Losing Logan will lap this up and I think new fan coming in will definitely find a new favorite.

My ONLY issue with the book ..... the next one isn't out yet! AHHHHHHHHH

ENJOYABLE

Okay, I finished the first book of the series yesterday and because I enjoyed that book I ordered and just finished the second of the series, oh, I also preordered the third in the series, so you should have some hint about what I think of the series and the author. I generally only read military sci fi.
Now for the negative, I am not sure what the proof reader was doing, but I don't think his/her mind was fully engaged in the job. This really didn't distract from the readability of the book, but it was something I noticed, and I am not a grammar, spelling Nazi.
Another good book, worth reading.

God's Missionary People

Van Engen's work, God's Missionary People, looks to assess the current state of missions. Looking to address areas of neglect and offering corrective via a refocusing of the Church's current perspective of missions. He recognizes missional ecclesiology as an area historically neglected showing that there has been little agreement between the Church and its understanding of missions throughout most of the 20th century (27). He posits that the Church needs to understand its missiological and eschatological role more clearly. We see that the universality of missions is the very aspect, through which the local church becomes the Church universal (33). A re-envisioning of the Church is possible when we recognize that, although constitutionally made up of by humanity, it is not human hands that build it. "This is at once the sociological theology and the theological sociology of the Church (44).
The author suggests the necessary "attributes" towards universal catholicity, apostolicity and unity need to be developed in the Church by recognizing its position of "sentness" in the Churches apostolic role (76). This is similar to Christ making "his dwelling among us" ; just as Jesus lived in the community so too must we. It must be seen that the missionary Church emerges when its members increasingly participate with their churches "being-in-the-world", and this through understanding the koinonia, kerygma, diakonia, and the martyria. It is through this lens that we see that by loving one another, recognizing the Lordship of Christ, reaching out to the least of the brethren and spreading the witness of reconciliation that the Church can be recognized, as it is through Christ that our "supreme authenticating sign of its own existence" can be realized (90). Van Engem recognizes the concept of missions as being cyclical in nature, in that just as the world needs the Church so to the Church needs the world (126). Looking to the "dialectical paradigm of modern ecclesiology" we see missions viewed both "from above" and "from below" (135). And it is in this we emerge through the very building of ourselves as a Church.
Van Engen looks to develop leadership on a very different model, as the old definition of leadership is inadequate to fit the needs of the local church. This he explains as corporate, with each member of the church playing a vital role in this communal leadership style (165). Although he does recognize that leadership is dynamic with many vicissitudes, being difficult to pin down to a specific praxis, stating; "leadership styles are never static" (174).
This book is well researched and footnoted, with the back of each chapter containing a section covering multiple authors from various disciplines for further study that are topical to each chapter. With 18 pages of biography the book also has a subject index at the very end of the book followed by a scripture index. In this reviewer's opinion this book, once read through fully, should be kept available for quick reference. It as a research tool I plan to keep on my main bookshelf.

Interesting Yet Curious Perspectives

Charles van Engen is a leading missiologist. In keeping with the subtitle of his book: "Rethinking the Purpose of the Local Church", he briefly sets ecclesiology and missiology in historical and contemporary perspective, then introduces "a new perspective".

He refers to his view of missions as a "radically new way of affirming the congregation's missionary nature" -- a break with the past twenty centuries of ecclesiology and missiology. While the received definition of missions is "spreading the message of His salvation to the world" (Fleming 1990:296), Van Engen defines this as "to spread throughout the world the knowledge of the rule of the King". Further, in the received view, the justified yet imperfect Church might be said to move continually upward toward God. In Van Engen's view, it moves continually forward through "the impelling force of the Kingdom of God", toward "shalom" -- "an emerging church".

While Van Engen emphasises the necessity to "receive by faith the ONENESS of the church", yet he himself would appear to adopt a sharp exclusivity with regard to "missionary congregations". While he rightly points out that a defective ecclesiology may unnecessarily lead to disunity, this does not appear to translate into a generous view of unity. He defines "missionary congregations" specifically as those which are "called to spread throughout the world the knowledge of the rule of the King", and hold a non-judicial view of salvation. With this in mind, he states that "conversion . . . happens uniquely in missionary congregations". Apparently it would not happen outside of them. There is little to dispel the suspicion that the rest of the Church is of little significance in terms of the central interests of the Church.

On the surface of it, Van Engen would appear to take an uncompromising stand on "the Church's role in establishing justice, righteousness, and SHALOM". Closer examination, however, would appear to reveal a different picture. A characteristic Western duality repeatedly creeps in. He states that the Church has "a debt to the poor and oppressed" -- as though the Church should exist on one side, the poor and oppressed on the other. Not only this, but "incomplete manifestations of the working of the kingdom" are given short shrift, perhaps fatalistically. Van Engen would seem to sense the inadequacy in his views as he notes awkwardly that the Church should "at least struggle more deeply to define" its identification with the oppressed.

While Van Engen gives a useful reminder that we need to "propel the people of God out in ministry in the world", disavowals of disunity, paternalism, domination, and enculturation would surely be too easily deconstructed in his writing.

Thorough introduction for scientists

I got this book because I didn't know very much about proteomics aside from "do some 2D gels and some mass spec." This book is primarily an overview of modern technology, techniques, and databases, which are discussed in chapters 1-4. The last chapter is a snapshot of some recent publications in proteomics, as well as future directions of the field.

Things I appreciated in this book include: no background on proteins (translation or modification); overview of strengths and weaknesses of various systems and methods; clear definitions of MALDI, ESI, MS/MS, and ion traps; extensive list of protein databases, with a summary/review for each.

Things I did not appreciate include: somewhat awkward organization (I would recommend chapter 1, 4, 3/2, then 5, otherwise some information in the earlier chapters might be confusing); unhelpful or busy diagrams; the beast of a chapter that is chapter 3 (overview of mass spec technology). Chapter 3 was extremely helpful, but it was also a bit of a drudge.

I still don't feel entirely confident that I would be able to analyze any mass spec data, but I have a much better idea of how it is obtained and what to look for. So overall, very helpful. I would recommend this to other people (with a basic understanding of science) who are interested in the nuts and bolts of proteomics.

Came recommended by one of the leaders in LCD-MS/MS; she has all of her lab members read it. Plenty of detail for beginners like me, but I imagine this would also be an excellent reference guide for those with more MS experience.

L. David Mech is a senior research scientist with the Biological Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey and adjunct professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology and the Department of Ecology and Behavioral Biology at the University of Minnesota. He is author of The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species, The Way of the Wolf, and The Arctic Wolf, among other books, and is coauthor of The Wolves of Denali. Luigi Boitani is a professor of vertebrate zoology and animal ecology at the University of Rome. He is author of Dalla parte del lupo, coauthor of Simon and Schuster's Guide to Mammals, and coeditor of Research Techniques in Animal Ecology.

If David L Mech's original book "the Wolf"(1970) has been known by wolf students and admirers as the 'Bible', then this new text must be known as the new testament. With contributions by the cream of the wolf biology world, including familiar names, Fred H Harrington, Rolf O Peterson, Ronald M Nowak, Ludwig N Carbyn, Douglas W Smith, Michael K Phillips and Steven H Fritts to name a few, Dr Mech (the Wolfman) and his European counterpart Luigi Boitani have put together 344 pages (plus 104 pages of index and references) of superbly researched material about Canis Lupus, the most misunderstood creature on the planet earth.
This detailed text is supplimented with numerous graphs, line drawings and photographs. But be aware, this is not a pretty picture book for your coffee table, the photographs here are included to Illustrate the behaviour and life cycle of a complex, social, carnivorous predator, whose brutal environment is matched only by their sometimes brutal survival behaviour.
Dr's Mech and Boitani must be applauded for the presentation of their material in a very readable style, scientific but not so complicated that the average reader or wolf enthusiast cannot make sense of the information provided. Yet for a wolf biology student the inclusion of the graphs and scientific data makes this a priceless piece of work, with numerous references to other available field data.
Until Dr David L Mech writes his next Wolf book (which is always an event in itself) THIS is the only book on wolves that anyone needs in their collection. Support David L Mech, support Wolf research, buy this book.

Essential reference but not for beginners

This is a wonderful book but it's not for someone who has just discovered an interest in wolves. If you want a good introduction to wolves, I'd suggest Peter Steinhardt's "In the Company of Wolves" or something similar.

Good as it is, it's not the kind of book that you'll take to the beach. It is important to realize that this is a huge book, about 8.5x11 inches and over 3.5 pounds (1.5 kg). It's also a scholarly volume, though accessible to the educated lay reader. The book is exhaustive and thorough, comprehensive in scope and detailed throughout. It has dozens of pages of bibliography, making it an essential reference if you want to read any part of the scientific literature on wolves.

The book emphasizes natural science topics relevant to wolves, but includes social-scientific and humanistic issues as well such as wolf management and human-wolf interaction. Some of the chapters address topics that the lay reader probably won't find interesting (such as taxonomy, physiology and parasitology, or molecular genetics). Other chapters cover topics that are less common in books for the Wolf Freak, such as communication between wolves or wolves' relations with other non-prey species.

Interesting as many of those topics are, most lay readers will probably turn first to the chapters dealing with wolves' relations with humans or wolf recovery. These do not disappoint. From there, you could turn to other chapters according to interest.

Highly credible writing

I was priviledged to participate in research in the "wolf-moose-spruce- goose-papoose" biome, Isle Royale in the middle of Lake Superior and received a hands-on education into the work of David Mech.

This book is systematic, rigorous, solid with breadth and depth of current understanding of wolves. This is not a "day at the beach" read, but a serious tome that is easy to access. Good references, indices, graphs and commentary. Wildland species and ecoystems have become polarized and politicized as special interests compete for their own belief systems. Science is based on evidence, not belief and Mech goes a long way to set the record straight on our understanding of wolves and ecosystems that support and sustain wolves in both Eurasia and North America.

This is a critical book for anyone seriously interested in wolves and wolve-sustaining ecosystems.
