Good for Individual Use, not so much for a Tutor

I've been looking for a long time for a good Geometry book and this is as good as it gets.

There is a decent amount of problems with very well written explanations. The book teaches well and has very intellectual problems as well as busy work so that the concepts are really set in stone.

The only reason I give it a 4 star is because it isn't what I was looking for. I was hoping to find something with a larger set of problems. Since the book already teaches the concepts, I've found that when I teach my student, he already knows what is going on, making the class a lot faster and me fairly useless.

It's a good thing as a book, but as a tutor, I wish it was a little less informative and a little more quantitative. ;)

All in all its a great book. It makes the tutor a little less useful though.

I bought this book as a summer review for my soon to be 9th grader. The workbook was not helpful. It did not do a good job of explaining the concepts.

This is a laugh-out-loud first novel, but be forewarned: Paul Beatty's humor is literate, but in- your-face outrageous. The faint of heart (or politically correct) should stay away. The White Boy Shuffle is a gleefully satiric gloss on black history and culture, featuring a main character named Gunnar (as in Myrdal) Kaufman, descendant of Euripides Kaufman, who stood aside and let Crispus Attucks get shot during the Boston Massacre, and Swen Kaufman, who--in an unfortunate reversal-- escaped south from freedom into slavery. Elsewhere, it features a character who attends Dred Scott High School, and another who works for the Department of Visual Segregation in Nashville, Tennessee, painting "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" signs.

Stylistically, this first novel is a tribute to one of Beatty's teachers, Allen Ginsberg. An author of two volumes of verse who has often been proclaimed the poet laureate of Generation X, Beatty effectively uses the Beat influence to amplify the voice of the hip-hop generation. Gunnar Kaufman, the protagonist of this coming-of-age story, earned his streetwise education in West Los Angeles, not unlike the author. Gunnar is just trying to be Gunnar?an intelligent, sensitive young African American who survives great tribulations while sparing no one his enormous wit. He is clearly a product of our times, and many readers will enjoy his piercing, often hilarious observations on contemporary society. It will be interesting to see what else this talented writer produces in the ensuing years. Meanwhile, this work will ring especially true to those under 35.

Possessing a growing reputation as his generation's poetic spokesman, Beatty proves in his first novel that his talent is not limited to verse. In this somewhat autobiographical tale of two contrasting Southern California neighborhoods, Beatty's stand-in, Gunnar Kaufmann, is one of the few black children in a predominantly white suburb, then spends his teenage years in all black-Latino-Asian west Los Angeles. Kaufmann's wry observations on his neighbors, his own poetry, and the events that lead him to a Boston University basketball scholarship are hilarious and often very moving. Recent news events, such as the 1992 L.A. riots, play pivotal roles in the narrative as Kaufmann's experiences add distinctive twists to them. Beatty assists his hero's uniqueness of perception by providing him with a surreal family tree that, in itself, constitutes a terrific satire on American lineage. The ending is heavy-handed and strangely moralistic, yet Beatty undeniably proves his prowess at whatever literary game he chooses to play. Aaron Cohen

Paul Beatty's writing reminds me that the emergence of genius always comes unheralded - a mature well thought out style, belief or idea that seems to have no precursor - mushroom (truffle more apropo for Mr. Beatty) that wasn't there yesterday. Beatty's talent on every page - a restless mind spraying ideas and poetic images at you at a pace that seems unsustainable. But he fails to shake my belief that nihilism is just a way of pissing away our most precious commodity, time. Carpe diem Mr. B. - hellish lives need that brilliant mind to shine a light.
D. Thomas says it better.
"Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night."

Loved this book

Loved this book. It was a little slower getting started but around 2/3 of the way through I was devouring it and had this feeling where I knew I was reading something special. It was beautifully written; I'd come across a sentence and want to read it again aloud because the words felt good in my mouth. It has incredibly moving parts and I thought it was masterfully done. I have been recommending this book to everyone.

I have fallen in love with Paul Beatty's work. His use of language is breathtaking and the character and story development is historical, educative and full of surprises. It's tough to be a white guy praising this work. It is a richly drawn parable on the black experience and so I have no business reviewing it other than to say. Read it. Wake up. It's important writing.

Definitely add this book to your Classic Beer Style Series collection

This book was well written, with great historically details and technical information related to the Lambic beer style. For a book that is over 25 years old, copyright 1990 by Jean-Xavier Guinard, it is still a good source of information on Lambics with more than 99% of the information current. The Kindle version allows those of us that did not purchase this book before it went out-of-print a chance to read this great book.

In the Morning I'll Be Gone won the Ned Kelly Award and was selected by the American Library Association as one of the top-10 crime fiction novels of 2014. Tom Waits could write songs about Sean Duffy!

McKinty's continued use of Tom Waits lyrics for Sean Duffy book titles is a selling point for me. However, these characters are alive, the action is tense, and this book is a "must buy" even without the lyrical title! Without spoiling the plot I will simply state that this is another taut thriller from Adrian McKinty. I have been following his career for years now and have read most everything he's put out. It's tough not to sound like a McKinty eulogist after so many years but after you read this latest Sean Duffy novel you will too. I am glad to see Sean Duffy continue into a sixth book and I hope there are many more to come!

I wanted to like this book so much. I’ve been a fan from the first book in the series, a series I completely fell into by accident. Duffy was endearing to me from the start and he’s evolved over the years. There were some bid changes going on in his world when this book takes place. I was worried the author wouldn’t be able to pull off such a huge shift from Duffy in book one to the current Duffy – the practically married dad.
I shouldn’t have been worried. For starters, as always, I found McKinty’s writing to be excellent. I’ve never been to Ireland but when I read this series, I feel like I have been. It’s real to me. The people are real, the places are. I see them and I feel the weather.
Duffy is still Duffy. He still has his admirable qualities. He still makes some choices that make me want to throttle him, but that’s some of what I like about him. It makes him human and believable.
I finished the book in one sitting. My heart raced for a good portion of it. This whole family thing adds a whole new wrinkle to things. It was done exceptionally well I think. He still has his flaws, but he’s also growing up and making an effort to be a better man. No, maybe that isn’t the right word because I happen to think he is at the core, a good and decent human being. Smarter maybe? Knowing when to take risks and when to rethink things seems to be developing more. He’s always been a smart detective, but he hasn’t always thought things out as fully as he could have. He’s getting better about that sort of thing.
This has been one of my favorite series of all time. I loved this book. I would really like to see what happens next.

Adrian McKinty’s latest POLICE AT THE STATION AND THEY DON’T LOOK FRIENDLY is the 6th title in his Detective Sean Duffy series.
The scene is Northern Ireland 1988. A man is dead at his front door - shot by a crossbow. His wife is hysterical and a goat from next door is nibbling on his jacket. The crime scene couldn’t be more compromised or more puzzling.
The plot is a complex one, full of twists and turns and surprises.
The main character is the weather and the human characters are just as grim and unpredictable. Our Sean is his own worst enemy most of the time. Lawson and Crabbie are intelligent, loyal and excellent policemen in their own right. They might make excellent main characters in the future.
The prologue is frightening. It upset me very much with its brutality and senseless violence.
Drugs, the IRA, the RUC, Carrickfergus, shady policemen, snitches, very complex and conflicted characters, moments of deep reflection, classical music, poetry, nasty weapons - shotguns, crossbows, guns, guns and more guns (did I mention all the guns?), terrorizing raids in the middle of the night, grim hopeless brutality, whiskey - a true noir.
Noir is a genre of crime fiction or film characterized by cynicism, fatalism and moral ambiguity. This Sean Duffy series has true noir ‘in spades’. I read a quote which said, “ noir is whiskey neat.” I couldn’t agree more.
I have read all of the titles in this series and find them frightening, thrilling and grim and I love them.

Immensely valuable.

I recently started law school myself at the age of 37. A few months before I did so, I took reviewer Richard King's advice (below) and bought this Companion. It is indeed everything he describes.

Not only will the articles provide solid, helpful overviews on specific topics, but the bibliographies will lead the reader on to other works on specific topics. This one is a keeper.

Although parts of it will be easier to read for those with some background in philosophy, such a background is not strictly necessary. And the essays on introductory topics (torts, contracts, property, etc.) may serve the intelligent student as well as a shelf-full of "Nutshell" volumes.

This volume will also be of interest to readers who are already involved in the philosophy of law; a number of the articles herein were written by well-known names in the field (e.g. Jules Coleman, Ernest Weinrib) and can't be found elsewhere.

And if you're just now introducing yourself to a particular field of legal theory -- law and economics, say, or legal formalism -- the introductions in this volume are worth reading _before_ picking up specific books on the topic in question. You'll be better equipped to read even, say, Mercuro/Medema's excellent _Economics and the Law_ or Weinrib's also excellent _The Idea of Private Law_ after reading the overviews presented here.

He states that he wanted to publish a text that introduces law students to the theoretical underpinnings of the law. He has succeeded admirably in reaching his goal. It is unfortunately the case that most law schools in the United States fail to introduce law students to the philosophy of law-such courses are usually elective, and most students take only courses that will help them pass the bar or assist them in their jobs. As a result, many American lawyers have only a superficial understanding of our legal system-they lack an understanding of the nature and functions of law that would not only enrich their lives, but that would also prepare them to make more meaningful contributions to the profession and to society. The Blackwell Companion can fill this void in law school curriculum, and it should be required reading for all law school students. Moreover, the approachable nature of the Companion should prove inviting to the undergraduate. It may even encourage students that are interested in the nature and functions of law to attend law school-an institution that is often the haven of those that are only interested in pursuing or preserving money and prestige. Highly recommended.

Thank God He Wrote This

The diversity and varying depth of legal theories and critical perspectives created a clear need for this book. Its structure is compartmentalized, and complements its breadth of vision. The various articles, written by leading scholars, are aimed at the introductory level. The achievement is comprehensibility - no advanced degree required. The superior quality of the articles cannot be understated.

(Paperback edition) The paper is of acceptable but lower grade quality. The text font is readable but left me with the impression that the publishing company used an old IBM Selectric typewriter.
