Miserable excuse for a book!

Hardly worth the paper it is printed on. Poorly proofed by someone that doesn't know the difference between their and there or sole and soul. (I kid you not!) The illustrations appear to be by someone that only received a 'C' in high school art class. I am sorry to admit I paid money for this fiasco.

I am still reading this book on my kindle and find it every intersting. I have heard the "Confucius said" all my life but never really knew much about him. This book tells about his life, his students and the things the Master taught his students. I would recomend it for all who are interrested in the religion he taught as well as his belief.

Ancient wisdom

The truth, scholars emphasize, is the truth, no matter what its source, even if the speaker is of a different race, religion, sex, or culture. This being true, people should pay attention to The Sayings of Confucius.

Confucius was born in 550 BCE. The Jesuits who carried his teachings to Europe called him Confucius, although his name was K'ung Fu-tzu. This book's introduction describes his turbulent time and the people and rulers of the period. It was a time when the country was broken into independent empires, each virtually powerless. Confucius held some government positions, but spent his later years in study and teaching, and gained many disciples. He studied history with the hope that he could find a way to help his people and country, and wrote books called Book of History and Spring and Autumn, and edited Book of Poetry. He died in 479 BCE at age 71.

Confucius did not write The Sayings of Confucius. Some scholars think that it was composed by a disciple of his based on what his teacher actually said. However, there are passages that speak of events long after his death. The general consensus is that the book was composed by students or admirers around 400 BCE. The following are a sample of sayings:

* Smooth words and fawning looks are seldom found with love.
* Put faithfulness and truth first; have no friends unlike thyself; be not ashamed to mend thy ways.
* A gentleman that does not seek to eat his fill...may be said to love learning.
* Not to be known is no sorrow. My sorrow is not knowing men.
* A gentleman puts words into action first, and follows them with words.
* Learning without thought is naught; thought without learning is dangerous.
* To know what we know, and know what we do not know, is wisdom.

Not all of the sayings are wise; some are trite. There is some repetition of thoughts told with different words. Some thoughts are difficult to understand. But these facts should not stop people from reading the book and gainig new ideas.

The Birth of Lucy Brown

"You're a Winner Charlie Brown" is a selection of Peanuts cartoons from 1959-1960. If you like Pigpen, this would be a good one to read, as he appears in quite a few places. You even see him clean in one strip! There's a lot of Linus too. We see him talking though his short lived dream of being a doctor, wondering if he needs to shave, hurling rocks in a vacant lot to let out his emotions. Plus there's Charlie Brown attempting to fly a kite, which you can see from the cover.

Though you don't actually see her in this book, a great deal of this book involves the birth of and thoughts about baby Sally Brown. Chocolate cigar are handed out. Charlie Brown wants to dress her in a jumpsuit similar to his signature zig-zag shirt, and worries about his sis. Snoopy gets dressed up as a baby. Lucy wishes she had a sister and upsets Linus, who has one of the most heartbreaking faces I've seen in Peanuts when they make up again.

Schultz would continue to develop the style of his characters, though I admire the way they are drawn here. They're cute, but aren't "stereotyped in shape" at this stage, if you know what I mean.

Though there are some funny strips, and the birth of Sally is interesting in the scheme of all things Peanuts, it isn't the funniest of the Peanuts series I have read. My favorite Peanuts moments are the silly ones, and though there are silly moments here, they are few. Just a matter of taste. A good read for a rainy day.

More tales of the Little Red Haired Girl

This book was geared more twords children since it was baised off of a TV cartoon, but any Snoopy fan can enjoy it. The charming illistrations are not in comic strip style but instead take up pages, a plus in my oppinion. This is the story of the ongoing trials of Charlie Brown and his unrequitted love for the little red haired girl...a classic peanuts senario if there ever was one!

Peanuts Lovers, Take Note

Is there anyone who doesn't have fond memories of the last day of school? That may be why the TV special "You're in Love, Charlie Brown" was my favorite of the Peanuts cartoons. Unfortunately, it is not repeated with the same regularity as the Christmas and Halloween shows, and I was pleased to find it in book form. The story involves Charlie Brown's last-ditch efforts to meet the little red-haired girl before school closes for the summer. Of course, he fails, but the story ends on a happy note. I particularly liked the spring pictures with trees in bloom, lawns covered with flowers, and robin's-egg-blue skies. I only wish there were more outdoor scenes in the book, as there were in the TV show. But it's still a lovely book to look at and a charming story, and I think children of all ages will enjoy it.

About the Author

Rob Phillips is the Fred and Nancy Morris Professor of Biophysics and Biology at the California Institute of Technology. He received a PhD in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis.

Jane Kondev is a Professor of Physics in the Graduate Program in Quantitative Biology at Brandeis University. He received his Physics BS degree from the University of Belgrade, and his PhD from Cornell University.

Julie Theriot is a Professor of Biochemistry and of Microbiology and Immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. She received concurrent BS degrees in Physics and Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Cell Biology from the University of California at San Francisco.

Hernan G. Garcia is an Associate Research Fellow at Princeton University. He received a BS in Physics from the University of Buenos Aires and a PhD in Physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Mind opening text book!

The second edition of Physical Biology of the Cell doesn't fall short to the expectations I had based on the master piece that I found in the first edition.
This book guides you in an extremely friendly way through the fascinating interface between biology and the more quantitative science. The authors present in an exquisite way how tools borrow from physics and mathematics can be used to gain deeper insight into biological problems.
With a brand new chapter and entertaining "Computational Exploration" sections, along with full colored images, the authors came again with a beautiful text book for any naive or field expert reader that decides to dive into the beauty of Physical Biology of the Cell

A textbook based on physical models of cellular mechanics and chemistry

This large, 800-page, 20 chapter, 9"x11" textbook is the size of a phonebook for a city of 200,000 people or so. Using many nicely-drawn figures and mathematical models, the authors work to unite the disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics.

Chapters 1 and 2 begin the book by first describing the molecular structure of the chemical compounds found in the cell, and then the geometry of the cell and its components. Chapter 3 addresses the time scale and time constraints for cellular processes. The hierarchy of biological time scales is summed up by Fig.3.2 on pp.78-79. There it is seen that protein synthesis requires tens of seconds, as does RNA transcription. Gating of ion channels requires only a single second, while enzyme catalysis requires only a microsecond. The authors provide a good example of complex molecular synthesis via an experiment showing the evolving molecular components of the bacterial flagellum--the assembly of which is seen to require about 3 hours (p.104). The authors mention that the E. coli bacteria are able to divide in as little as 1000s, although copying its genome alone (i.e DNA replication) would seem to require 3000s (p.92). It is found, however, that E. coli are able to get a jump on DNA replication by starting to replicate its daughter's, granddaughter's, and great-granddaughter's chromosomes before it has even completed its own (p.113). It is also noted that the 3000s division time for E. coli division corresponds to the case where the environment supplies only glucose. For the case where the environment is rich in amino acids, the division time may be cut by a factor of two.

Beginning with chapter 5 "Mechanical and Chemical Equilibrium in the Living Cell," this book draws heavily on an understanding of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics at the level of an advanced undergraduate or graduate course or textbook on that topic (e. g. Reif's Fundamentals of Statistical and Thermal Physics). Chapter 6, entitled "Entropy Rules," dedicates itself to the development of statistical mechanics, and chapter 7 applies these concepts to two-state systems. Chapter 8 applies statistical mechanics to the folding of polymer chains via a random walk analogy, especially with regard to DNA. Chapter 9, "Electrostatics for Salty Solutions," applies the techniques learned in a sophomore-level undergraduate course on electricity and magnetism to the electrical screening of macromolecules in a saline solution (e.g. Kip's Fundamentals of Electricity and Magnetism Second Edition).

The bending and flexing of cell elements is discussed in chapters 10 and 11. Chapter 12 is dedicated to fluid flow, chapter 13 concerns diffusion, and chapter 14 deals with the influence of cell size on transport. Chapter 15 addresses cellular chemical reactions, including cytoskeletal polymerization and enzyme kinetics. Chapter 16 concerns molecular motors and chapter 17 is on membrane permeability. Chapter 18 is about evolutionary genetics and biological clocks. Chapter 19 discusses of the regulation of cell processes. Chapter 20 brings the book to a close by examining whether mathematical modes, such as those described in this volume, are able to accurately model the cell.

I liked the book!

I used this book for an undergraduate/beginners graduate course on biophysics, and read through all of it in 4 months. It is a fairly self-contained book, with few serious gaps. Admittedly, it is not light reading, but the festive and playful attitude of the authors is very welcome. I firmly believe that both the students and I learned a lot, both of biology and of physics. For the authors: as a teacher, I would appreciate it a lot if you could have all the equations in a collection of ppt files, the same way as you have all the figures in the book.
