Depraved world + Magic = Awesome
By PaperFury
Thank you to Random House Aus for the review-copy!

This is a magical book! Literally. It reads like a dystopian (a world of extreme poverty with a tyrannical king, but modern technology), but magical powers are a way of life. That mixture of dystopian + magic = awesome.

The premise was awesome! Premises make up a good 50% of the adoration factor, for me. There’s a billion books about kids who go on a journey to a mythical “paradise”. But most books don’t have over-sized foxes, alchemy bombs, a smart-mouthed pick-pocket, and the ability to create illusions. THAT is why Chasing The Valley stands apart. It sets up an awesome world, but better yet – the world-building increases in epic-ness as the book continues! That, ladies, gentlemen, and aliens, is really good writing.

The plot, on the other hand…meh, not so good. Like I said, you’ve probably read a Journey story a hundred times. Particularly in fantasy. I think the premise and world-building were good enough to stop the plot from being boring…buuut, to be honest, sometimes it dragged. The chapters never ended with cliff-hangers. I was COMFORTABLE the whole time. That’s bad! There wasn’t a pull keep-reading-keep-reading, because I knew nothing hair-raising would happen. It’s a safe read. So, while I kind of enjoyed that (relaxing, okay?), my attention was never 100% caught.

The magic rocked. It was solid! I love it when something fantastical like that is a way of life. There’s no oh-my-gosh-squee-I’m-sixteen-and-therefore-will-discover-I-can-fly/shoot balls of flame/be invisible/have perfect hair. Everyone has a “proclivity”, and it matures when they’re 18. It can be Beast, or Darkness, or Bird, or Fire. Cool stuff. It varied from the usual (ice/fire/water/air sort of stuff). The world-building is just epic. Honest! It is.

Also: HUMOUR! This book is stinking funny. The dialogue? Gorgeous. I could hug it.

Characters? Because it’s a journey, there’s a crew of escaping teens: Danika (narrator), Teddy Nort (pick pocket), Randor (leader), Maisy and Clementine (the rich, snobby twins), aaaaaand Lukas (mysterious gorgeous boy). There’s lots of personalities and they all clash really well. That’s a good thing! The dialogue is awesome. Clementine and Dankia like to have a go at each other every three sentences, and Teddy is HILARIOUS. Laugh-out-loud style. My only problem was with Danika. As a narrator, I expected more from her. She was awesome: street savvy, humorous, tough, and (sometimes) kind. Buuuut, she didn’t grow. I wanted to see her character mature/change/grow by the end of the book. Nope. Nuffin’.

Honestly? I liked this book a lot. But I didn’t love it. It had nearly everything I demand in a book (good dialogue, good writing, excellent premise, humour), but it just didn’t evoke the feels.

The first in a fun filled adventure trilogy!
By Brenda Telford
Danika Glynn was sixteen; alone after her parents and sibling had been killed in the last round of alchemy bombs the king had launched, she struggled for survival. She knew she had to join the king’s army when she turned eighteen – everyone did – but she was determined not to. After all, it was on the king’s orders that her family had been killed; why would she help him to kill others? On the night the bombs struck again, Danika fled to the sewers. It was the only place to be safe from the bombs and the after effects of fire – but there were other refugees sheltering there as well. When she was rejected by the crew of refugees in hiding, she decided to attempt a daring escape. Escape over the city’s walls would mean either death or freedom; a tentative freedom at best, but the lure of the Magnetic Valley was enough to spur her on.

In the frantic scramble over the wall, Danika fired a flare to distract the guards – the consequences of this action were long reaching and meant that she was suddenly a fugitive. But when she joined other refugees their determination to survive was greater than anything any of them had encountered before. With their magical proclivities to help in times of crisis - some were yet to mature – they managed to stay one step ahead of the king’s cruel hunters. But could it remain that way? They were only a group of teenagers; they had no idea who they could trust…

Would the small group of young refugees manage to find their way to the Magnetic Valley? Would they even be safe in the Valley if they did achieve their goal, or was it just a myth that the king couldn’t penetrate that area? One thing Danika knew for sure – they could no longer return to the only home they had ever known…

This is the first in the Chasing the Valley trilogy by Aussie author Skye Melki-Wegner; a fantasy/young adult novel which is full of action and adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it – it was a fun read with an unlikely heroine. Danika is full of grit and determination and her new friends are the same. I actually purchased the second in the trilogy on finishing this one – I need to find out what happens next! Highly recommended.

GIMME A FOXARY
By Nara Lee
Fast paced and action packed, Chasing the Valley was quite a nice, fast read. From the very start, intrigue is built around the world and the characters, and, as the reader, you're constantly wondering what's going to happen next. The book was quite enjoyable overall, however, I do have to say there were a few minor issues with the world building that perhaps very slightly lowered my enjoyment of the novel (to be honest I'm just being overly nitpicky, but I like my world building to be detailed).

The idea of "proclivities" was rather interesting. If you haven't read the book before, if someone has a proclivity in a particular element/thing it just means that their power is to do with that thing (oh, ever so eloquent, Nara haha). Anyway, for example, one proclivity is Beast. This means that you can understand and command animals. The thing I would have liked explained though, are the smaller details about proclivities. Can I specialise in anything? Anything at all? Like, can it be Cloud, or Tree or something? And why is it that it's taboo to show others your proclivity before you're 18? I feel this wasn't really explained properly. Also, there were these charms which were objects imbued with magic- these really weren't explained either. How are they made? Do they ever run out? I just feel that the world building was slightly shaky because these sorts of questions weren't answered. Perhaps they'll be answered in sequels.

In terms of the world building in general, though, I think it was pretty good overall. It wasn't absolutely amazing, but it was definitely enough to be enjoyable! I quite liked the idea of magic being negated by magnets- which is why the main characters are searching for the Magnetic Valley- the safe haven where the King and his hunters cannot reach them. Also, another thing I loved were the foxaries- these were basically massive foxes that people ride around on. FRICK YES GIVE ME ONE NOW.

I feel like people who like reading books just for the romance wouldn't necessarily like this book. I mean, there was a bit of romance thrown in, but it definitely wasn't the focus of the novel. Which was appropriate and definitely was the way I like it. The focus was much more so on adventure and magic and finding the Magnetic Valley, which I feel is reasonable.

I unfortunately did see the "twist" coming from a mile away- come on, it was so obvious! But it was still nice that one aspect of the twist was something I hadn't expected (although that was more so simply because I hadn't thought about that particular aspect- gah trying not to be spoilery). I also laugh at how the blurb says the "mysterious" Lukas, because, seriously, there is hardly anything mysterious about that kid. It was so glaringly obvious who he is...I really liked him as a character though! It was very interesting to see how the relationship between him and Danika is slowly built up.

The ending was cut off at quite a nice point. It wasn't exceptionally cliffhangery, but there was still definitely the promise of more to come (e.g. the King hasn't been dealt with yet.) I will definitely be reading sequels and look forward to seeing how Melki-Wegener will further develop her characters and her world!
