Trip Lee is an author, teacher, hip-hop artist, pastor, and thought leader. A church planter in Atlanta, he regularly preaches and teaches at Christian conferences and events, and has performed his music for thousands of listeners around the world. As a hip-hop artist, Lee has received wide critical acclaim, while reaching a large and growing audience. He lives with his wife and family in Atlanta.

Don't be a Benchwarmer

In Rise: Get Up and Live in God’s Great Story, Trip Lee encourages readers—particularly young readers—to not waste time or wait for a better opportunity to live for Christ:
“There’s no in-between phase where we just exist in a youth, college, or young singles ministry. You’re a real human being, a real follower of Christ, a real world-changer right now.”
Throughout his chapters, the author gives specific examples of areas where young people should grow up, exercise more caution, and become more responsible. All the while, he avoids self-righteousness, being quick to admit his own weaknesses. Though I wish I had read Rise when I was 20, there’s still plenty for me at (almost) 40.
Lee’s theme reminds me of John Piper’s Don’t Waste Your Life. Piper, by the way, wrote the forward to this book, which would be a compliment for any writer and adds credibility to any book.
I especially appreciate Lee’s writing style. It’s simple and smooth. He doesn’t use hard-to-understand theological terms or over-used Christian phrases (Lee calls it “churchy language….It’s kind of like pig Latin, but more sanctified”). He’s also witty: “I knew it! As soon as I saw him, I pinned him as the type of guy who judges others as soon as he sees them.” Nor does Lee go quote-crazy, like many young Christian authors. We hear the author’s own voice, telling his own story, in his own way, and that’s refreshing. Here’s a sample:
“You’ll never forget when Jordan switched hands in midair or when Ray Allen hit that three at the buzzer. Those are the guys you want to be. They’re in the action at those key moments, not just spectating. But for some reason we do the opposite when it comes to life. Everybody wants to be a benchwarmer.”
Lee’s message: don’t be a benchwarmer. Live now. Don’t sleep in, but Rise.

Rise is good for a teenagers/young adults

When I was a teenager, I must have heard hundreds of messages on this verse in 1 Timothy:
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV)
The messages were about being a young person of influence. We were to rise above the occasion and make a difference for Christ whether it was in school or our churches. Like a newborn teenage Christian, I ate it up as much as the next guy that felt they were motivated to take on the world.
Young people seem to get written off from time to time and every once in a while, there is a message for them. Trip Lee, who is an amazing rapper and preacher, has written a book for young people called Rise, which his latest album has the same title. Lee writes about not being a bench warmer but to get up and make a difference. He writes on you don't have to be a super-Christian to do great things for God, which seems to be a recurring theme as of late in other books.
Lee also writes about sexual purity, which for young people is a much needed subject to address, while also tackling the issue of pornography. He also talks about marriage and why he got married at a young age. One thing that I really appreciate Lee writing about is being involved in a church and not just attending the worship service. Christians are called to use the gifts the Holy Spirit has given them to serve the church regardless of age. I love Trip Lee. I love his albums and the sermons I have heard him preach at Capitol Hill Baptist Church from time to time. Great, inspiring book to read.

Trip Lee is an author, rapper, and now pastor. He's juggling a lot of cards right now including being a father and husband, so when reading Rise you'll find a lot of real life narratives that Lee has put to use in his own life. Each chapter focuses on an occasion to rise for God, and show your faith. The book has a lot of motivational speech, and grows in depth as you read.
Summary: God created people for more than what they may be rising to now, and Lee wants to encourage the younger generation to rise up more than they are now for God. He doesn't just encourage others though, he puts himself in the hot box with everyone else. Lee leaves no problem that maybe hindering the reader untouched, and he finds a way to continue to motivate the reader past the issue they maybe dealing with. The book gets personal more toward the end as he recounts his decision to marry at a young age, and outside of his race, and also his recent battle of being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Disease.
If you've heard Trip Lee's music you might know that he's breaking the mold of faith based hip hop, and him and Lacrae have gotten their names out there. Lee though doesn't seem to have let this fame go to his head, and he has instead remained humbly dedicated to his passion. Not only that, but he seems in tune with reminding people of their purpose to serve Christ.
The book does inspire, but I also was reaching for depth that I could never really find. I liked the honesty that Lee begins revealing to the reader at the end, but for the first part of the book I couldn't help but feel I was being yelled at. I also felt the target of the audience was mixed. It's aimed at people my age, which is in their twenties or thirties, but I felt maybe the audience was a bit younger than me.
I also felt while encouraging people to overcome certain sins and step into church service, some of the difficulties of this were overlooked as well. There are many reasons people maybe dealing with what they are dealing with, and while this book may inspire them in the moment, the issue may need a lot more dealing with than a simple change of mindset.
Not to give people excuses, but I feel there are just so many layers to the surface layer being addressed. If you're looking for a quick read that is tying to motivate you in something you're already feeling pulled to do then it works for that.
