From the Author
Tools for Teaching is a training program between two covers. It describes the skills of classroom management in practical, down-to-earth terms that makes sense to practicing teachers. It walks you through skill performance so clearly that you can practice with a colleague by reading out loud from the book. Tools for Teaching deals with the entire range of management situations that define the life of a teacher in the classroom - kids who disrupt, kids who sit helplessly with their hands raised, kids who say, "I'm not doing this." More importantly, the book focuses on prevention using lessons learned from highly effective teachers. These "natural' teachers do not work themselves to death. They do not become burned out. Tools for Teaching brings the skills of our most gifted colleagues to light so that they can be understood and mastered by all.

One of the most common questions that I am asked after a workshop is, "Where were you twenty years ago?" Another common question is, "Why don't they teach us this stuff in college?" The skills described in Tools for Teaching are literally the tools of the profession - your job description. The language, illustrations and format make "Tools" easily accessible. And, the heavy paper and sewn binding ensure that the book with hold up to years of hard use.

A Great Tool for Teachers of Any Experience Level or Content Area
By TLJB from the South
Only 70 pages into this book and already the suggestions are making a difference in the classroom and my perspective. Tired and weary from "velcro" students and the class clown keeping me from doing my job better for other students, I now have a few tools in my box for dealing with them in a pleasant way that doesn't suggest my frustration with their neediness. I set up the room with one of the suggested furniture models, and so far, I can move around the room quite well, and proximity is quelling more off-task behaviors, but not all sometimes with 30 plus students in the room built for 25. I still have much more to read, but this book has been a good refresher for this veteran of 21 years. Fred Jones KNOWS students and their multitude of tricks to get out of work, turn in half-baked work, whine, and attempt to bargain. If we teachers give into those behaviors (and others he cautions against) we "lose" the momentum for positive and effective classroom dynamics for maximum learning. The DVD is a great addition as well, and I am learning techniques that college classes didn't even touch. The book is well-worth owing and using for teachers of zero years experience to 30!

The Only Teaching Book You Need
By Allison M.
Let me start out by saying that I am a new teacher. This will be my very first year as a full-time teacher with my own classroom. I was terrified...until I read this book.

It's true that veteran teachers or really great teachers do not need this book. Similar to books like Teach Like a Champion (Lemov) and the First Days of School (Wong), Tools for Teaching is a collection of ideas and strategies that set good teachers apart from their average (or below average) counterparts. Jones did not create these techniques; he merely observed them by spending hours and hours in real classrooms watching stellar teachers. So if you are a veteran teacher or a really great teacher, chances are, you probably already use these strategies. But, for new teachers who have not gotten to truly watch and learn from truly great teachers, this book is absolutely indespensible. It gives so much practical advice and will truly make that steep learning curve of first-year teaching just a little less steep.

New or struggling teachers...buy this book. You will not be sorry!

P.S. Guess I should add a little something about the 2nd edition. I do not have the 1st edition, so I'm not sure how much is different about them. I did watch the DVD that is included with the 2nd edition, and I will say that I didn't get a whole lot out of it. The clips on it are mostly just Jones speaking to workshop participants (and a lot of what he says is text from the book, word-for-word). I would have liked to see actual teachers or Jones showing how to use the techniques. Not so much.

A decade under the influence
By wadie
After ten years of struggling with apathetic, entitled, though socioeconomically challenged students, I found this book on Amazon while searching for classroom management books. Let me be very clear: I am not a believer. I never accept anything I hear and challenge every idea I hear in my life automatically. Every edu-strategy I've heard prior to this book I would describe as "well-intentioned but entirely ineffective and unrealistic theory." This book is different. Reading this book was like reading a summary of my decade of teaching woes. Fred Jones somehow cuts the BS so prominent in books written by well-meaning but removed edu-theorists. He gets it. He has described to the most exacting detail what I deal with daily. That means he understands. THAT MEANS HE UNDERSTANDS. If you're reading me, then this book will at minimum validate your sanity and give you clarity about what you deal with daily with the entitlement generation. At best this will give you some strategies to improve your teaching effectiveness. In my opinion, the revelation of this book is that the "relevant lessons + rapport = happy, successful students" approach taught to us in teacher school is, well, a lie. It replaces that approach with a more primitive, realistic, compelling, honest, and accurate approach: students respect teachers they fear, not teachers that make interesting lessons and care about them. Fearful students are respectful. Fearful students learn. Fearful students value caring, dedicated teachers. Think about it. Most of the problems we deal with stem from parents who have tried to be their child's best friend. We are all too familiar with the fallacy of that approache, yet we have been taught to follow it, more or less. This book liberates you from that erronious thinking. BUY THIS BOOK if you are a struggling teacher. Thanks, Fred. I hope to attend your seminar in Kansas City this summer and hope to achieve more success as a teacher. I do care about my students and want them to succeed in life.
