About the Author
G�nter Figal is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany. He is the author of several books on Gadamer, Heidegger, hermeneutics, and social and political philosophy.
Jerome Veith is completing his doctorate in philosophy at Boston College.

Excellent Companion Volume to 'Basic Writings'

This book is an excellent companion volume to the HarperCollins Basic Writings. Where Basic Writings comprises a small number of either long excerpts from key works or entire essays drawn from among Heidegger's most central texts, the Heidegger Reader spreads its net much more widely and eclectically. The selections are numerous and short, and cover areas that were of central interest to Heidegger (or Heideggerians) but are not necessarily part of his most well-known works: e.g. essays / excerpts on Holderin, Junger, Nietsche, and Cezanne, as well as the famous posthumously published interview with Der Spiegal.
The Heidegger Reader also has the benefit of having been translated by a single hand, whereas the Basic Writings was edited from a wide range of different translations.
For anyone interested in a fundamental understanding of Heidegger's key ideas and the range of his thought, the Heidegger Reader along with the Basic Writings form an excellent complementary set.
(Interestingly, as noted by one of the other reviewers above, Gunter Figal -- the editor of the Heidegger Reader -- has since distanced himself as an enthusastic proponent (if that is the word) of Heidegger's thought based on several passages from the recently published (in German only) "Black Notebooks". Interested readers may search out that development online.)
